  • Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864. I searched the records for children born to David & Susan 1864 onwards. I found:

    May 24.2.1865

    Susan 31.10.1867

    Jane 14.3.1871

All registered in Limavady. (The site has them under Newtownlimavady which was the original name of the town. However the “Newtown” bit had been dropped by the late 1800s. Today it’s just Limavady). I didn’t see William’s birth so suspect he was born pre 1864. You would need to search church records for children born 1851 to 1863 inclusive. If the family were Church of Ireland, the Faughanvale baptism records start in 1802.  If Presbyterian, Faughanvale records start in 1819. There’s a copy of both sets on microfilm in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

Here’s Jane’s birth certificate on 1871 which tells you her father was a labourer and the family lived in Barnakilly, Faughanvale.

    Likewise Susan, https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1867/03468/2274019.pdf

May was born in Carnamuff which is close by to Barnakilly. (Labourers families often moved about to follow the work).

I had a look for David Armstrong’s cottage in the land valuation books for Carnamuff and Barnakilly but did not find him listed. There were several other Armstrongs in Carnamuff and so he might have been residing with them. It’s also possible that he had a cottage of his own but it was too low a value to be listed. That was quite common for labourers cottages

Here’s what looks to be Susan’s marriage in 1895.

Her husband’s address was in Alexandria, Dumbarton (Scotland) so you would expect them to have moved there.  They are in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire in the 1901 census. (Scotlandspeople has the 1901 & 1911 Scottish censuses as well as the statutory birth, death & marriage records). I can see some likely children to the marriage: Susan 1896, John 1898 & Joseph Armstrong 1902. All in Bonhill. I also see a death in 1967 of a Susan Armstrong Herriott aged 63, again in Bonhill. Seems likely to be the same family.

Susan was living in Fountain place, in Londonderry when she married.  The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Armstrong and Fanny Campbell. This makes me wonder if this might be her mother, and presumably brother Joseph, though I can't find a birth for him or sister Esther:

Anyway that should get you started.
