My gt. grandmother, Sarah COLE/COLL, was born in 1829. Her parents were Charles COLL and Jane/t SHAW who married in Ramelton on 31 August 1817. There were 6 older children than Sarah - Catherine, Cecelia, John, Jane, Samuel and Charles. I'd like to find any earlier records for this family. Charles's death record also showed an older daugher, Eleanor, who may have been by an earlier marriage.

They had left the area by about 1831 , and went to Kircudbright in Scotland, which had been the birthplace of Jane SHAW, Sarah's mother.

  • Hi, thanks for your message and interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

It may be quite hard to find any earlier records than what you already have, as the reality is that sometimes records pertaining to the early 19th century do just not exist.

Have you tried the Tithe Applotment Books? These are land records from Ireland dating from 1823 to 1838. There is a manuscript book for almost every parish, giving the names of occupiers, the amount of land held, and the sums to be paid in tithes to the Church. There may be some record of the family in this. You can search at the following link:

It may also be helpful to look at the following websites:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
