My grandfather, Solomon McCool, born 19 Nov1869   to Hugh McCool and Nancy Mahon has as his birthplace Turmone on his birth record.   His father's place of residence on Solomon's birth record from the Register's office is listed as Rashenny, Clonmany.  Can someone tell me where, in Clonmany, I might find Turmone. In response to the Ireland Reaching Out and The Gathering campaigns I am traveling to Ireland from USA in March and would like to visit Turmone and the nearest Catholic Church which would have stood around 1869.  Thank you in advance of your response.

  • I'm not from Donegal, but I found some resources that might help with some of your questions:

    http://www.bmdnotices.com/ElectoralArea/Townlands.aspx?ReferenceId=943&…

    http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fianna/county/donegal/donrc.html

I didn't have any luck finding a Turmone in Clonmany. There could very well be a Turmone that is known to local people but not found on the internet.  I did howver  find a separate DED called Tremone/Turmone. Could be another possibility that he was born in a location separate from his father's residence.

Also if your family was in Ireland in 1901/1911 you should be able to find them in the census.

    Thank you for your message.

I have forwarded your query to a volunteer in Co Donegal who may be able to assist or advice you.

Please remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.

  • Paul,

I don't know if you found out where Turmone is or not, but there is a Tir Maine house in Clonmany.  They have a lot of different spellings for the same surnames and townlands.  So perhaps Turmone could be Tir Maine.  See the following:

    books.google.com/books?id=iosiAQAAIAAJ

    Mabel R. Colhoun, ‎North West Archaeological and Historical Society - 1995 - ‎Snippet view

Another item of interest in connection with the same house concerns one, Dennis O'Donnell, who in 1740 was ... 1 mile S. of Clonmany, slightly W. of same road serving Tirmaine House (10/25) from Clonmany, slightly N.W. of village of Glebe.

    Good luck!
