I am searching for information regarding my 5th Great Grandparents, James and Margaret (Kees) Ewing. They attended the Presbyterian Church in Convoy. They had 7 children: Elizabeth (John Eliot), Eleanor (William Gregg), Margaret (William Macauley), Nancy (Thomas Kee or Kees), Mary Ann (Thomas Roulston), James (Matilda Glasgow), and Thomas George (Violet Irwin). The last child, Thomas, is my 4th Great Grandfather who came to Logan County, Ohio in 1850 around the same time as his brother James and sister Margaret. I know that James (the father), had 3 nephews named: Samuel, Samuel, and Alexander Ewing. The two Samuels came to Hardin County, Ohio. Does anyone recognize these names from any documents they may have reviewed or are related to any of the people mentioned above? It is possible that like many Ewing's in County Donegal, that my ancestors came from Scotland (the highland region close to Dumbarton) and then came during the plantation of Ulster. It is also likely that they moved to areas of Northern Ireland and then settle in County Donegal within a radius of Letterkenny. Their likely path would have been near Letterkenny around the 17th and 18th centuries (1600's and 1700's). This is the only possible place that I can think of that my Ewing's would have went to since it is in between Convoy and the most Northern part of Ireland.

Hi,
Thank you for you rmessage.
Have you tried looking in Chirch records for information on James and Margaret? Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations:
- in local custody,
- in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
- and at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast.PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society.
You could also check for them in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838 found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and the Later Griffith's Valuation, 1848-1864, found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites which you may find helpful are:

Hi,
It is hard to find records pre-1800 but I have heard the name Ewing quite a bit in Donegal.
As it is an Ulster Scots name you could try to contacting Monreagh Ulster Scots Heritage Centre - http://www.monreaghulsterscotscentre.com/
You should also have a look at the Donegal Genealogy Resources website - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/
Have you tried contacting the local church to see if they have kept records.
Good luck with your research.
Regards,
Eimer

This may be a long shot. I have a relative, William Ewing, b 1795 in Northern Ireland (sorry, that's all I have on that) who married Ann Fernandez Cameron (1797-1861) on 2 June 1831. I have no information beyond that except that at some point they emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada which is where Alexander Ewing was born in Sept, 1832.
Oh, and he was likely a Freemason, as were his son and grandson.
