I'm particularly interested in building up more detail on the Bates-Thompson sides of the family tree.

We know the Thompsons were from Letterkenny and Corravady and the Bates' were concentrated in the triangle of Castlefin- Stranalor - Convoy.

The Bates family emigrated from Carnowen (Carnone) to New Zealand in 1926.

My Grandfather was John George Orr Bates - I'd like to establish the connections to the Orr family as well.

  • Hi,

Thanks very much for your post and hopefully we can help you.

Donaghmore is the nearest parish to Carnowen, however, for the other areas, you should post a message on the main County Donegal message board.

Can you tell me what religion the Bates of Carnowen were?

Ps there are links on the main Donaghmore page for the churches of the parish.

    Regards.

  • The Bates and Thompson families were all members of the Presbyterian Church in the parish. They were pew holders of the Donaghmore Presbyterian church.

  • Very good.

Have you been in contact with Donaghmore Presbyterian Church?

  • I have much of the informatiomn from the Donaghmore Presbyterian Church and family in the area. The Bates & Thompson information is, however, sketchy before the 1854-57 pew holders list. There are Bates families at Garrison hill that could be relations but I cannot make the links to demonstrate the alleged family connections.

  • Hi Alan,

i have revisited some old territory and have found an Elliott of Donaghmore. George Elliott of Braughanby Donaghmore married 1884 Convoy to Sarah McClure [she was born 1850 Convoy].

    Cheers

  • Kia Ora John,

Thanks for your information about George Elliot and his marriage to Sarah McClure. I don't have any data about that marriage on my database but:

I have a John Elliot marrying a Peggy Elliot(?) born about 1810 (?)  who was the daughter of Thomas & Lydia Elliot on my data base. Peggy & John had a son George - may have been born about 1845-50. My database doesnt show him as being married.

I also have a George Elliot (born between 1825-45) who is the son of William Elliot and Margaret Taylor. Lydia Elliot was William's sister. They were the children of Thomas Elliot & Lydia Moore. William Elliot appears to have married twice. His First marriage to Margaret Taylot from which I can trace my family line. His second marriage was to a ( First name Unknown) Motherwell. A daughter from that union (Rebecca ) married a George Orr..they had a son John George Orr....it appears that my Grandfather was christened John George Orr BATES in acknowledgement of his Great Uncle (?)

I don't have any marriage recorded for this George Elliot either. Can you deduce which George married Sarah?

    Regards

    Alan
