Seeking any connection, but particularly info on marriage of James Callahan and Mary Doherty, probably Donegal, probably close to 1868.

James b. 1834, d. 1873, death registered in Millford.  Can't find record for Mary.  She was said to have been born in England.

Daughter Hannah b. 1870, registered Kilmacrenan.

Daughter Bridget b. 1872, registered Millford.

Can't find birth records for daughters Annie (1868) and Mary (1873).

Bridget and daughter Mary gave townland as Tirargus, Kilmacrenan at marriages in Termon and Gartan in 1892 and 1893.

Daughters Annie and Hannah came over to USA, Pittsburgh, PA at ages 15 and 13 in 1883, to live with their aunts Ann and Kate Gibbons (father William, mother Bridget McGlynn/McGlenn) who were in their 50s and had been in US since about 1850.  Speculating that perhaps Mary Doherty's mother was a Gibbons...?

Mary Callahan married John Callaghan (1901 census spelled Callaghon, 1911 spelled it Calloghan) and lived in Letterkenny.  Her children were Henry (Harry), Hannah Maria, James, Susan, John, Bridget, Annie, Patrick-- Harry b. 1895 down to Patrick, b. 1909.

Bridget Callahan married Bernard Connaghan.  Their children were Bernard, Hannah, Mary, Charles; the boys appear to be twins, both 4 years old in 1901.  By 1911, only Bernard and Hannah are living with the father; I believe Bridget may have died before 1911.  In 1901, the father's sister Margery was living with them.

Tantalizing but tenuous connection with a Patrick Doherty b. Donegal 1832, emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1850s: a family story had been that a Doherty relative became The Lumber King of Rochester in Australia.  This Patrick Doherty had nothing to do with lumber, apparently, but as a local politician was referred to as King of Rochester, sarcastically, but it was printed in the newspaper.  Our Mary Callaghan cousins had a clipping of it.  Patrick's parents were Michael Doherty and Hannah Gibbons.  Patrick's brothers Hugh (1845-1914?) and William (1849-1897) were also nearby in Australia.

That's pretty much all I have.  Is there anything there anyone recognizes?  Any suggestions?

  • Hi Meg,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that somebody recognises these families and makes a connection with you to help you further your research.

In the meantime, civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you should be able to find birth records for Annie and Mary in civil records. These are available from the GRO, so you should contact them for a copy. Here are their contact details:
