I have an ancestor, Thomas Brogan, who was born in Ireland around 1821. He most likely came from Donegal, as his father is listed on a census as being from there. I know that he married in 1857 in Co Donegal. He then moved to Glasgow, Scotland with his wife Mary, and became a coal dealer. His parents are on his death certificate as William Brogan and Jane McGrorty. I presume they were married in Co Donegal too, but I am completely stumped as to which parish it might have been. I'm not sure just where to start. I have tried various websites, but I can't find Jane McGrorty anywhere. I thought to look for her, as Brogan is quite a common name, and so is William.

I checked the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for William Brogans (presuming that William was still alive in 1858). There were 11 records as shown below. I then looked for McGrorty records and there were six also below. I then looked for McGroarty listings. McGroarty is the more common spelling. There were 52 entries so I did not copy them. However, most of them were in Inver parish with Killymard parish in second place. You may want to focus on the Brogans in those two parishes. I also found a death index record for a Jane McGrorty who died in 1868 in the Strabane registration district. (Strabane covers the part of Donegal bordering Co. Tyrone near Strabane). This would be a lead and it may be for a different Jane McGrorty. You would have to write to the GRO to get this death record www.groireland.ie
