Hi. Can anyone help me find the Carton (Cartin/Carten/Cartan) family.

It is thought they came from Muff / Carrigans before our line moved to Derry.

Some records state The Rock? Carrigan's I believe means Little Rock?

Any and all help appreciated

  • Hi Jacqui

You might want to have a look at the Tithe Applotments (1823-37)  & free on line

There are 2 Cartins in  Donegal - both William in 1830 Townland Drumacloghan parish Tullyfern

There are no Cartons, Cartens or Cartansd in  Donegal but lots in other counties

Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 also free has only 1 - a Thomas CARTON in Donegal

The Irish census 1911 (free) has lots of Cartans and McCartans (none in Donegal) 35 Cartens (0 in D'gal) 195 Cartins (a few in D'gl but most in Londonderry) Carton 700 in Dublin

www.rootsireland.ie/ has 5000+ Cartins & surname variants birth/baptism records in all counties with 31 in Donegal starting in 1804
