Hello all! I have been researching my Doonan great great grandfather for years-any help would be so appreciated. Here's what I know:

John Joseph Doonan born: Oct. 1844, died-1922. He arrived in United States in 1865 (age 21). Became naturalized as a US citizen in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1870. Married Mary Anne Gallagher, from Kerry born: about Apr 1845,immigrated to USA in 1865. They lived in Philadelphia PA and had six children, three of them survived into adult hood. I am looking for the Doonan family of John from Ireland, been stuck and don't know where to start. I also would like to find the Gallaghers from Kerry!  Any help and assistance would be much appreciated.

The origin of my gg grand parents were written in back of family bible by my great grandmother Elizabeth Katherine Walsh whom married Francis Anthony Doonan (1872-1939), John Joseph Doonan's son.

Thanks for your consideration,

Cindy

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I'm wondering if the surname was either Doogan or Dooghan. I checked the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Donegal and there were no Doonan records. I also checked the 1901 census for Donegal and the only Doonan record was someone born in Co. Fermanagh. Doogan/Dooghan is much more common in Donegal.

Gallagher is a rare name in Co. Kerry. Only 17 Gallaghers in all of Co. Kerry in the 1901 census. On the other hand, Gallagher is very prominent in Donegal probably the second most common surname after Doherty.

FYI. The one problem with Co. Donegal is that very few RC churches have records prior to 1850.

Let me know what you think.

  • Roger-

Thank you so much for your reply. I had trouble finding your reply in the website,so I am just discovering it now. My apologies.  I will search further into my Doonan as being possibly from Fermanagh, it is quite possible. I will continue to dig and let you know if anything turns up. Thanks again.

We had a problem with our web site last year where a poster was not being notified of a message to their post. So the apologies should be on our end. All the best with your research.

At the top of the page, there should be a Find Communties search tab. Enter Drummully and you will find a parish page in Fermanagh and Monaghan.
