Looking for any information on the England family of Donegal county. My 5th great grandfather was John England b abt 1730 Donegal county, Ireland. It is believed has parents may have been William England b abt 1700-1710 Scotland or England and Mary Watson. John England arrived in New Hanover county, North Carolina about 1750 from Ireland with the Grant and Ross families. Family history has it that on board ship coming to America, John met Jane Ann Grant of Tyrone county, Ireland, daughter of Jesse Grant and that a romance blossomed. John and Jane Ann were married abt 1757 in Burke county, North Carolina. They had 13 children: Elizabeth 1758-1820, Aaron 1760-1839, Ezekiel 1761-1819, Joseph 1763, John 1765, Margaret 1767-1853, Elizabeth 1769, Mary 1772, Rhoda 1773-1840, Joseph 1774-1860, Kezziah 1775-1820, Sarah 1777 and Barsheba 1778. John England died Mar 1795 Burke counth, North Carolina.

I descend from John's daughter Rhoda England b 1773 Rowan county, North Carolina/d 1840 Jackson county, Tennessee. She married in 1796 William Byrne b 1765 Dublin, Dublin, Ireland/d 1823 White county, Tennessee.

Any information on the England family would be appreciated. If any England descendants have done dna testing, I'm on FTDNA and GEDMatch. Also have a tree on Ancestry.com.

  • Sharon,

There?s no-one named England in Griffiths Valuation for Co Donegal (c 1850s) nor in the 1901 Irish census for the county. So the name doesn?t appear to have been very common in that county. There are no surviving church records for the county from the early to mid 1700s and so I suspect it will be next to impossible to trace the family.
