Alexander and Susanna were married in 1869. I believe in Ramelton. Her father is shown as Robert Patterson, his father was Samuel Stewart who died in 1860. I know they had a number of children, Mary, Samuel, Alexander, William, I believe there were at least 6 children. I have been unable to find any information on the family after 1892. I would appreciate any suggestions on how i might proceed. Thank You

  • I can see the 1869 marriage registered in Dunfanaghy Vol 2, page 70, in the index to Irish Civil registration on Familysearch.

Possible birth for Alexander Jan – Mar 1885, Vol 2, page 52; Samuel 1874 Vol 12, page 56.  Several possibilities for Mary eg 1880 & 1888 and numerous Williams. Probably 6 or 7.

According to this site, the marriage took place on 1.5.1869 in Myra church. Alexander Stewart was a farmer and lived in Dunfanaghy. Susanna lived in Raymunterdoney and her father was a labourer.

Possibly worth ordering some of the birth certificates to see where the family were living. The only Samuel Stewart listed in Griffiths in 1857 in the Dunfanaghy area lived in Doocashel Glebe townland where he had a share of a 50 acres farm, with three 3 other farmers. A George Stewart also lived in a house there and so was probably related.

  • Thank you so much for your response. How do I go about ordering birth certificates?. I believe the births were not registered, though the baptisms were recorded. They belonged to the Church of Ireland. I think the daughter Mary was born at the end of 1869. Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to find my maternal grandfather Alexander who is shown on the 1901 census in Creeslough, occupation stone mason. He probably was born about 1879 to 1882. He lived in Tuam, Co. Galway from about 1903 until his death. He met and married my grandmother Julia Hare. He was in Tuam building a new bank. He was a stone mason his whole life. I have not been able to find a date of birth recorded after his arrival in Tuam. He became a Catholic and we are unaware of any contact with his family after this. He was not baptised when he converted as he had been baptised at birth.Thank you again for your response.

  • Statutory birth registration started on 1.1.1864 so you won’t get a birth cert for any before that date, but you should get one for events after the start date (though in the early years not every birth was recorded).

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros).  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can’t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don’t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.
