I am researching my Irish roots and need direction as to where to look for information.  I have the following data:

Mary O'Malley - born 1826 in Mayo.  Father Partick and mother Mary (Kune).  In 1845 she married Michael Early (Earley) - born 1818 in either Mayo or Donnegal.  December 1847 they left Ireland.  On 25 Dec 1847, Mary gave birth to firstborn - John.  In 1848 she gave birth to second child, MaryJane, in Oneida, New York.  They moved to Mackinac Island, Michigan.  The rest of the children were born there.  Michael Early died 9 Mar 1895 and Mary died 14 Oct 1910.  Both are buried at St. Anne Cemetery on the island.  Their daughter, Bridget, married Patrick Callahan (O'Callahan from Cork) and had Ann Elizabeth Callahan.  Ann married Warren Augustas Pitts.

I am looking for any information on the O'Malley, Early, Kune, and Callahan families.

Thank you.

Deb N.

  • Dear Deb

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Initially I would advise you to start a search using something like familysearch.org (a free site). Other sites like ancestry provide a wide range of sources beyond the parish records.

Civil registration in Ireland began in 1864 (generally speaking) so you won't find a birth, marriage or death records in Ireland before that time. We are heavily dependent as a result church parish records. However, records vary i their start date from parish to parish. For Donegal many of the parish records do not start until the 1850s, 1860s or 1870s. Once you have establish a place of birth you can then at least find out what records are available for the parish.

Other sources you could check (free online):
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1832): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp
    Griffith's Valuation (1837-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
    Census 1901/1911: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

For ancestors from Cork as well as familysearch or ancestry you should also check out irishgenealogy.ie - some Cork records are available there on this free site
