Looking for any information on Samuel & Maria McMurray: Samuel died in Letterkenny on18 July 1862, at which time he was staff sergeant in the Donegal Artillery, prior to civil registration coming into being.

Two of their children (George born Lifford in 1855 & Susan born Letterkenny 1857) settled in New Zealand. Susan was my greatgrandmother.

Would particularly like details of Samuel's parish death records (albeit parish unknown!) & where & when born.

Any help would be invaluable.

  • Letterkenny is in the parish of Conwal.

You don?t say what denomination Samuel was. That?s generally important to find the right set of church records. However, as far as deaths are concerned, prior to 1864 only the Church of Ireland routinely kept burial records, and unfortunately in this case the Conwal early records were destroyed in the 1922 fire in Dublin. So Conwal Church of Ireland has no burial records prior to 1878. So you might be out of luck with the search for his burial record. Unless there is a gravestone.

No mention of the death in the newspapers on this site:

  • Many thanks for your kind response. Son George was Anglican Archdeacon of Auckland NZ for decades so I guess that his parents would also be Anglican as the apple seldom falls far from the tree.

That 1922 fire has much to answer for!

I do appreciate your comments & guidance, & will beaver on in this seemingly hopeless quest.

  • Yes looks like Samuel would have bene buried in the Church of Ireland. You could try contacting the church to see if there's a gravestone. (Church of Ireland in Letterkenny).
