My great grandfather, Charles Caldwell, was born in 1837 in County Donegal. He left Ireland in 1853. I can find no record of his crossing the Atlantic or arrival in the US. It is likely he landed in Philadelphia, PA. I am coming to Ireland in Sep to conduct a search for living relatives.

Neil:
You don't mention the religious denomination of the Caldwell family. RC records are almost non-existent back to 1837 except for one ot two parishes. I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and could not find a Charles Caldwell batpsim from 1832-1842.
The 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings show that most Caldwells listed were in East Donegal bordering Co. Tyrone. The parishes would be Clonleigh, Donaghmore, All Saints and Convoy. Go to www.askaboutireland.ie
