Seeking information about Elizabeth Rose Dougherty, who emigrated to the USA New Jersey at the end of the 19th-beginning of 20th Century.

She died in childbirth in New Jersey c. 1913. Seeking her birth certificate, and from which parish she may have come.

Thanks,

John Leone- grandson

  • Hi John,

Do you have any more information?

Was she married?  and what was her husband's name?

Where in New Jersey did they live?

How old was she when she died?

Her name most likely was changed to Doughterty from Doherty upin entering the USA.

    Regards,

    Eimer

  • I'm afraid the information is pretty scant. My mother was born  Elizabeth Rose Dwyer in New Jersey Oct 21, 1911. Her mother, according to my sister, was Elizabeth Rose Dougherty Dwyer, married to George Dwyer. That's all we know. Apparently ER Dougherty died in childbirth a few years after my mother's birth; she was given to my great aunt Josephine Dwyer Kemper, her father's sister, and was raised by the Kempers (Clarence was the husband's name.)

Don't know whether George Dwyer and ER Dougherty married in US or Ireland; when they emigrated. I believe my mother was born in Hudson Co NJ. I've requested her birth certificate which should have some information.

I don't think her name was changed, simply because my mother referred to her with that spelling.

Thanks for any help you might give.

  • I tried looking at the American records first to see if I could find any record of Elizabeth Rose Dougherty but the only record that I found was a Mary Dougherty (1873) that married a George Dwyer (1868) in 24 Sep 1895 in Bayonne, Hudson, New Jersey.

This may be your grandparents.  Elizabeth Rose may have been known by the name Mary.  Let me know when you get your mother's birth cert and I will try to help you with your Donegal connections

Also you may find details on your grandmother's death certificate - eg - her parent's names.
