Hello, My great-great grandfather James Hilly is on the Griffith's Valuation in the Townland of Cormullin, which was in the Parish of Drumhome.  His wife was Susan Welsh (or Walsh).  I know of 2 daughters Serah (or Serah), born 03 Oct 1865 and Mary Ann, my great grandmother, born 09 Dec 1862.  Serah is supposed to have come to America living in or near New York City and was married to a Brady.  According to the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 US censuses Mary Ann came to America in 1881.  She was married on 31 Dec 1885 as Mary Ann Hill to Joseph Reuben Smith in the Town of Greig in Lewis County, New York.  She lived the rest of her life in Lewis County, New York and died 24 June 1930.  Mary Ann and Joseph had nine children who grew to adulthood and are supposed to have had two who died at birth or very young.  I am looking for information on James Hilly, Susan Welsh Hilly, Serah Hilly Brady and any other children James and Susan may have had. I have found James in the Irish Petty Session records on Find My Past.  Serah's birth in the Irish vital records on FamilySearch.com and Find My Past.  I have a lot of information on Mary Ann's descendants that I will share with any cousins I find.  Irene

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I'm going to assume your family was RC. Records for the RC parish of Drumhome do not start until 1866. Civil registration of RC marriages did not begin until 1864. I did check Roots Ireland but did not find any other baptismal/birth records for children of James and Susan. Also, did not locate a marriage record.

  • Thank you for checking Roger.  I have some updated information and a question.

On https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ in the Civil Records I searched for James Hilly's death in the Civil Registration District/Office of Laghy from 1880-1900.  The results were 2 boys ages 4 and 6 and a man age 64.
The information for the man is:
    Name: JAMES HILLY
    Year of Death: 1883
    Group Registration ID: N/R
    SR District/Reg Area: Donegal
    Deceased Age at Death: 64
    Returns Year: 1883
    Returns Quarter: 3
    Returns Volume No: 2
    Returns Page No: 25
I think this may be my great-great grandfather James Hilly of Cormullin, County Donegal.

In the same database searching for his wife's death I found:
    Name: SUSAN HILLY
    Year of Death: 1884
    Group Registration ID: N/R
    SR District/Reg Area: Donegal
    Deceased Age at Death: 53
    Returns Year: 1884
    Returns Quarter: 1
    Returns Volume No: 2
    Returns Page No: 31
This may be my great-great grandmother Susan Welsh Hilly also of Cormullin, County Donegal.

Does anyone knows if there is more information to be found from this like an actual death record or were those destroyed and only the index left?

As background, the www.irishgenealogy.ie site has the death index records for 1864-1890 and from 1891-1950s they provide the complete image of the actual record. They plan to add more images back to 1864 at some point.

You can wait for the images or write to the General Register Office for copies of the records. Here are instructions.

Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx   Print the death form and fill it out to the best of your ability. Make sure you ask for a copy only. Include the info from the index record. You have to mail the reguest to Ireland (address provided when you print the form). You can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back. The cost is around four euros for each record and I use a credit card.
