I am looking for information on Michael Andrew McGinley, born March 25, 1833, Ireland and died April 23, 1906, Giles County, Virginia.  The 1850 and 1860 Census for Virginia has Michael coming to USA in 1843 and his parents were Patrick and Catherine McGinley.  I think Catherine Malloy/Molloy may have come from Glenties area, but not sure.

This is a portion of Michael's obituary in a Virginia newspaper

Michael McGinley was born in Ireland, March 25, 1833.   He was an orphan at 11 years of age, he took ship for America on the "Voige",  the vessel was wrecked, but he was rescued by another vessel, and was landed in New York.    Several years were spent in the New England states;  but later he migrated to Charleston, SC, and spent some time there and at Augusta, Ga.    Later he come to Giles County, Va., and spent a short time in Pearisburg.    About this time the contract was let to build a public road up Wolf Creek, and he was chosen as one of the directors or overseers of the road.     While discharging those duties, he formed the acquaintance of Martha A. Lambert, whom he married November 10, 1859.

  • Hi Dianne,

You seem to have quite a bit of work done already.  I'm sure you are aware that records from the early 1800's are hard to come by in Ireland (unfortunately).

The good this is that McGinley is a Clan name and they have an organisation that may be able to help you - http://www.mcginleyclan.org/

I'm sure if you contact them - they may be able to help you in some way or at least point you in the right direction.

As for the Molloys - There are many Molloys in the Glenties area still today.  I also have Molloys from Glenties in my family tree but no Catherine.

You may also want to contact the Donegal Library Service - http://www.donegallibrary.ie/

And have a look at the Donegal Genealogy Resources website - Glenties in the Parish of Inishkeel and Glencolumbkille -http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/

    Kind regards,

    Eimer Shea

  • Hi Dianne,

I came across this as I too have McGinley connections in Glen. The farthest I've got back however is to my great great granda Patrick McGinley born in 1860 and her married a Catherin Gallagher. We may be related if we went back far enough. I'm not sure if you own this profile that I found on Ancestry or if you've seen it but it has photos and much info so check it out:
