Trying to make connection from Bridget McGill to Patrick McGill, navvy poet. My granny was Bridget McGill and she said her first cousin was Patrick McGill, her father and his were brothers. I'd like to find out Patricks parents/grandparents names as they will fit into my family tree. Bridget McGill was born in Glenmacannive in 1895 to Anne (McDyer) and Hugh McGill.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Below are links to the birth record for Patrick McGill and the 1889 marriage of his parents: William McGill and Bridget Boyle. You will need to sign-in to see the records. The father of William was Patrick. Was Bridget's McGill grandfather also Patrick?

Thank you Roger! My great grandfather was Hugh McGill who died in 1908, I think he was aged 50. I don't know his fathers name but an interesting mention on William McGill's marriage certificate was that his father was a joiner - Hugh McGill was a mason and built houses so perhaps a follow on from what his father did. The story I have heard is that there were 7 brothers and Hugh's son Daniel was supposed to be the 7th son of a 7th son, what order or who they were I do not know. Hugh's first born son was Bernard (called Barney) so that made me think Hugh's father was Bernard but it might not have followed on, my granny did not follow this - her first born was called Patrick but only because the priest decided that - she had wanted him called Hugh after her father but she ended up with Patrick Hugh who became Packy!

Hi all!
I realise that the messages here were posted quite a few years back, but I can add a little more to the above, in the hope that anyone interested might see this. My grandad was Joseph McGill, brother of the Bridget McGill mentioned in the first post. He was born in Glenmacannive in 1899/1900. As an adult he worked as a stoker on merchant ships, and moved to London in the 1920's. He married Winifred Fickling in London in 1927 and they had two children - Michael McGill (born 1928) and Jeanne McGill (my mum, born 1932) - both now deceased. They lived in the Holborn area of central London. They were not well off, and my mum told me that when she was little they several times received packages of girls' clothes for her from the USA, sent by an "uncle", who as she remembered it was a writer of "Westerns" and lived in the States. Sadly she didn't remember anything else about the sender. I have always wondered whether the relation was indeed the author Patrick McGill.
That's about all I can contribute, I'm afraid. It would be great to find some documentation confirming that Hugh McGill and William McGill were brothers, making Joseph and Patrick cousins, but I suspect that it isn't possible from the records that have survived.
Best wishes to you all,
Tony Simmons

Just seen this post....your grandad was my great uncle Joe. We did not know his wife's name or his children, only that he was divorced (?). He went missing during the second world war, my granny eventually got a postcard from him, he had lost his memory. My granny and granda went to London to arrange his funeral in 1969.
Granny said that Patrick McGill was her cousin, their fathers were brothers. Granny's oldest brother was Barney (Bernard). Her second oldest brother was Patrick but usually the oldest son is called after the father's father, can't find out where Bernard comes from, maybe great granny's side, she was Annie McDyer and died in 1955 aged 97. There were 12 children and most of them went to America. I don't know when Patrick McGill went to Florida, he was based at Windsor Castle for a few years, I think before/after the First World War.
Hope you can pick up on this...

Forgot to say.... Patrick McGill from Florida had 2 or 3 daughters, so that is maybe the reason your mother got the clothes.
