Six adult Dugan siblings immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, in the 1870s and 1880s. Their parents were Daniel Dugan and Mary Doherty. DNA testing has recently matched descendants of two of these immigrants to people currently living in Kilcar parish. This is exciting for us because we did not know their origins. We still do not have documentation of the births/baptisms of these people in Ireland.

We have not had a chance to visit the area yet but look forward to doing so, perhaps in 2016. I will be happy to correspond with any interested persons.

    I checked Roots Ireland and could not find any baptismal records for any of the children. The Kilcar RC records start in 1848. On July 8th the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. Below are the years available for Kilcar parish which is in the Diocese of Raphoe. I also looked at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilcar parish. It appears the family surname is more likely Duggan. Three Daniels are listed.

  • Nora,

    My copy of the Baptism record for St. Cartha's Church (the RC church for Kilcar) has the following enteries;

    1) Catherine,  10 Oct 1848  Parents Daniel Duggan and Mary Doherty  Townland of Leitir, Kilcar

    2) Ann,            7 Nov. 1850 Parents Daniel Duggan and Mary Doherty   Leitir, Kilcar

    3) Daniel,        6 Mar. 1853 Parents Daniel Duggan and Mary Doherty    Leitir, Kilcar      Leitir (Leter) is a townland located in the south central portion of the Kilcar Parish.

    There appear to have been many Kilcar families who emigrated to Cincinnati in that time period including a Doherty family from the townland of Derrylahan.  I have copies of letters (1860's/1880's) written between the sibilings of this family that mentions other Kilcar emigrants residing there.
