Hello

My Gt Gt Grandparents Neil & Sarah (nee McHugh) Doherty from Legnahoory had eight children.

Roseanne b.1851, Dominick b.1855, Mary 1857, Catherine b. 1858, Neil b. 1862, Sarah Jane b. 1863, Michael b.1864, Cecily b. 1866

Roseanne, Mary, Catherine & Neal immigrated to Australia.

Dominick married and was a farmer / grocer Legnahoory.

Michael died 1865

I would like to find out what happened to Cecily.

I have her baptism record. Baptised 20 July, 1866. Sponsors William McGallagahy and Anna McHugh.

I am a descendant of Sarah Jane Doherty, she married Michael James Doherty from Ballyheerin in Australia 1885.

I looked for civil birth, marriage and death records for Cecily Doherty records and did not find much. I did not locate an 1866 civil birth index record or a civil death index record for a Cecily/Cecelia Doherty born around 1866. I did locate an 1891 civil marriage index record for a Cecelia Doherty in the Letterkenny registration district. I also checked Roots and the spouse was William McLoughlin. They were married in the Letterkenny RC church which is about 8 kilometers from Legnahoory. However, the parents names were not Neil and Sarah McHugh so I presume this was a different couple. (The index record is below). FYI: The fathers name was James

Possibly Cecily emigrated either to Australia or another country. Another possibility is that she died young but the death was not recorded civilly.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Hi Roger

    Many thanks for your reply.

I have seen the above names and spent some time looking through the Irish census.

I don't think she emigrated to Australia....maybe USA or Canada.

Cecilia would have been 14 yrs old when her sisters and brother emigrated to Australia.

    I will keep looking :)

  • Julie,

My husband is the gg grandson of Dominick (the farmer/grocer).  I have all the information about their family that lived in and ran the general store in Legnahoory, but I'm looking for death and buriel information for Dominick and his wife, Margaret.  Also, I'm trying to find out more information on Neil and Sarah.  What can you tell me?

    Thank you,

    Trisha Hordan

  • Hello Julie and Trisha,

Long shot here, but I noticed a Michael in Julie's list of children and wondered if Neil might have a brother Michael who married Hannah Gibbons?   My gggm was Mary Doherty, born about 1851.  Circumstantial evidence implies her parents were Michael and Hannah, who had 3 sons who went to Australia and did quite well in Rochester, Victoria-- Patrick Doherty especially, but also his brothers William and Hugh.  A sister Grace stayed in Letterkenny and never married.  A sister Ann married McKay in Scotland but returned to Letterkenny and apparently had no children.

Mary married James Callahan and had my ggm Annie in 1868, Hannah in 1870, Bridget in 1872 and Mary in 1873.  Annie and Hannah emigrated to US in 1883 where Hannah died same year.  The girls came to live with "aunt" Ann and Kate Gibbons who were in their 50s then.  Annie married O'Leary in 1889.  Bridget married Bernard Connaghan from Losset in 1892 and had 3 children before dying in 1909.  Mary married John Callaghan and lived in Letterkenny, raising 8-9 chidren.

I have no info on siblings or parents of Michael.  Ann and Kate's parents were William/Barney Gibbons and Bridget McGlynn/McGlenn.  Not sure if they were Hannah Gibbons' sisters or nieces/cousins.

Thank you for reading this.  I hope if you see any connection, you'll reply.

  • Hi Meg,

I am not familiar with your family. Most of my research is around Legnahoory area. What townland did they live?

    Cheers

  • At their marriages, Bridget and Mary Callahan gave Tirargus as their Townland, which is quite near Legnahoory.  Their parents had died (James in 1873 and Mary Doherty possibly 1878) and they went to live with grandparents after 1873.  There is a death record for a Mary Callahan, age 27, in Tirargus in 1878, with Michael Doherty as informant.

A Michael Doherty died in Tirargus at the age of 91 in 1896.  A Hannah Doherty, wife of Michael Doherty, a farmer, died at 65 in 1889, with son Mick Doherty as informant.  (Tho that age would mean she could not be Patrick's mother as he was born in 1832... still: ages are often wrong on such documents.)

In the 1901 census a Michael Doherty and wife Catherine McGinty live in Tirargus and with them is their "nephew" Henry Callaghan.  Mary Callahan Callaghan's eldest son was Henry, same age.  Michael and Catherine were married in 1895.

I think there is not a Michael Doherty in Tirargus in the Griffith's, but there are other Dohertys there.

My aunt visited children and grandchildren of Mary Callahan Callaghan in Letterkenny in the late 1980s and was told the family (Callahans? Dohertys?) came from "up near Church Hill."   In Patrick Doherty's Australian obit, it said he was born in Church Hill.  Maybe the Dohertys moved from Church Hill to Tirargus?  I do have proof through correspondence that Patrick Doherty's children were cousins to Mary Callahan Callaghan.

Thanks, Julie.  I know it's a long shot as there are so many Dohertys in Donegal.
