Looking for any information on John McClintock.

Information I have is as follows -

Born about 1770 believed born in Burt, Leck Parish, County Donegal.

Married Rebecca Latto (or Latta) born about 1779 in Burt also. Married in Bute (?). Both believed to have died in Ireland.

Approximately 8 children born to them between 1803 and 1819. Two may have died at birth as no details. Births at various locations - Burt, Letterkenny, Maughraloy (?). Those known (6) all came to Australia some time before 1857 and after 1834.

Eldest son of John, William - born December (?) 1803 in Burt.

Married Martha Robinson (born February(?) 1816 in Burt to parents William Robinson and Ann Carter) - they had a son - William - born 1834 in County Donegal then 10 more children from 1836 all born in Australia.

(If John McClintock and Rebecca Latto/Latta died in Ireland - say around 1834/1835 - then perhaps eldest son William bought whole family to Australia ?)

Would welcome any information.

  • Hi,

I have never heard of Burt in Leck Parish but there is a parish called Burt on this website.  Maybe the administrator can help you more with your research.

The names that you mentioned, McClintock and Robinson are quite common names in the parishes of All Saints, Inch, Burt and Raymoghey.

I have heard the name Latta but it is not as common as the two others.

But I do recommend that you do join Burt parish and also maybe All Saints and Inch Parish.

I wish you the best in your research.

    Eimer

  • William McClintock and wife Martha Robinson emigrated to Australia in 1838.  Sister Eliza and husband Robert Miller came on same ship.  Sibs John, Ann and Jane came in 1841 (all single & married in Aus), sister Margaret and husband Nathanial Wilson came in 1853 with their 9 children.

Church marriage records that I have state Wm and Martha married Newtowncunningham Pres. Church 26 Feb 1834.  William's parents John McClintock and Rebecca Latta of Magherabuoy and Martha's William Robinson and Ann Latta of Tollet.

I would like to find out more about both parents - especially if there is any connection between Rebecca and Ann.

  • Hi,

I actually live in Newtowncunningham so I will ask around and see if anyone has any information.

There were Latta's in All Saints Parish in the 1901 Census for Newtowncunningham.  I know this is a little late for you but they may have been related.

As I said in a previous message, McClintock is still a popular name in the area.

I will get back to you if I find anything.

    Regards,

    Eimer

  • Hello,   I'm descended from William's daughter, Ann who was born in Australia 1839.

I'm actually wondering what  the correct spelling of the surname is?

This is great information . I've just started to research my family tree. I've seen Bute mentioned elsewhere as the

marriage place but it doesn't seem to exist..Burt maybe?

Thanks for any more information posted.

  • That would be fantastic thanks Elmer.  It is very difficult to access Irish records from Australia - except for those that are on line.

  • Hi Fiona

The spelling is McClintock - I think the McClintough was what someone wrote from what they heard.   Are you in Aus?  I have a bit of info on Ann but not a great deal.

Contact me if you need any.

  • This information is very helpful and appreciate your time and effort.

I am researching John and Rebecca McClintock and their childdren who came to Australia.

Also their daughter Ann.  Her birth has different dates and cannot find her birth records.  Born 1809/10 or 1817 as her grave suggests.  Can you help on this point.  She was married to James Thompson in Bowenfels, New South Wales.

Any leads on any aspect would be very much appreciated.

I don't seem to be able to find a central BDM central record office.

    Regards, Bev from Australia

  • Hi, Maureen

I am also researching the families of John & Rebecca who came to Australia.  We have seen dates for Ann McClintock, dau of John & Rebecca, as 1810 and 1817.

As I cannot find her birth records, hoping this is the Ann you have spoken of.

I am following families of William and Martha in particular, but of-course looking for records in Ireland to trace the parents.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated,  Bev Oliver in Australia.

  • Hi Bev

Wm & Martha were my g.g. grandparents.  Ann arrived in Aus in 1841 on boardd "England" at Port Phillip.  Shipping records show her age as 24 so that would mean she was born about 1816/17.  Finding early records in Ireland are difficult to say the least.  At the moment I am waiting on a report from an organisation there that I have paid to see if they can find anything on John and/or Rebecca.  If I get anything I will let you know.

I have a McClintock tree on Ancestry if that helps.
