Anyone out there related? This is what I think I know!. Francis Sharpe was born about 1795 and married Grace Munday. . Their sons were Teague and Cornelius. Cornelius was my great grandfather. John Gallagher married Grace Duffy and their daughter Hannah who would've been born about 1825 married Cornelius Sharpe. They were married in Schuylkill county Pennsylvania. But both were from Donegal . They say the Gallagher's were from the Glenties area. And the Sharpe's were from Adara,Loughfad,Portnoo. Thank you Lisa. I have a public tree on ancestry. I have a Gedmatch number and belong to a few different groups on face book that are associated with Donegal and an email if you contact me. very anxious to get my Irish roots together. Thank you. Hi Lisa:
Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the programme.
If you would consider creating an Ancestor profile about one of your ancestors, that would be great. You might find that others researching the same family who would be interested in collaborating with you. The link to create a profile is here: https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy
Have a wonderful Easter! Any questions, please email me at: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com

I too have roots in the area of southwest Donegal and in Schyulklll county. My grandfather, Patrick Henry O'Gara, was born in Summit Hil and later moved to Centralia where his parents are buried.
His father, Patrick Sr. was from Glemcolumbkille, just over the hill from Ardara.

John thank you. I just sent you an email. In Galic,Gerin (50 different spellings) translates to Sharpe. My mother was a Sharpe. There's still a Sharpe home in Portnoo and a relative that I talked to six months ago in Letterkenny. He is a third cousin that I never knew of until I started ancestry. Definitely Donegal is on my bucket list. Please feel free to contact me. Lisa

I would be interested in comparing our DNA on Gedmatch. My Griers came from Tullyfern but others came from the Glenties, my McClay likely came from Letterkenny and I keep seeing Gallaghers in match lists.
The match may go back too far or just within reach. My email is sdl1177@cs.com so we can exchange Gedmatch numbers.

Lisa, Hi . my name is HelenMoran, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have been able to trace my Irish roots to Marry Gallagher who married Cornelius Mooney. Their daughter, Ann, married Hugh Dougherty, sometime around 1846. They immigrated to America, and I am not sure they arrived together, She stated on a census form that she arrived in Philadelphia in 1847, where she settled. I am 75, and I remember my elderly cousin Anna Dougherty [she never married] telling me that the Phiadelphia Doughertys met Hugh's ship when he arrived, but she never mentioned the date. Hugh had a younger brother Thomas born about 1832, in Ireland who was died in Andersonville prison in Georgia in 1864, a prisoner of war. I saw his enlistment card, and he was illiterate. An X marked his name. I also found that his death benefits and pension were paid to his father John. I have a lot of minor facts, but nearly nothing their Irish roots. My cousin Anna, spelled Ardrath as the home town in Ireland, and for years I looked but to no avail. Then last year, coming across Ardara, [and me a history buff], read that Ardara was once spelled Ard Ratha [ loosely having a meaning of a hill or fortress] I had found Ardrath. Ann and Hugh had 9 surviving children so there are many of us in the dark. Any info you have or hints would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Helen Moran e-mail mombo442000@yahoo.com.

Hi, I have a great great grandmother, Anne Gallagher from the Dunfaghy area of Donegal. She married John Harkin. Their daughter Grace Anne immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts around 1890. She had two brothers that I know of John and Patrick Harkin. I know Patrick also immigrated to the US. I have a tree on ancestry.com ( Bambery Tree)and also familysearch.com. My GED match number is #CT8329378.

Thank you Susan and Helen I sent you both an email. Ellen I checked our Gedmatch numbers and they aren't a match. And Gallagher is a tough name. But I've seen those names together,Harkin, all in the same area with my family names also. I'm sure it's going to show up it just may take a little while. But let's keep working on this. I have a public tree on ancestry. I will check your tree also if I can't get it as long as I have your email I can send you an invitation to my tree. Or vice versa. Happy Easter to all three of you. And thank you all for responding.

Hello all of you!
In Donegal our "Gallagher" connection is "Bridget McCabe formerly Gallagher" written in the original birth record of her son Joseph McCabe, born in 1864 @Straworther (Ardara Co. Donegal). According to old maps, Straworther in 1864 is a tiny cluster of houses outside of Glenties. Joseph's father was Patrick McCabe, a small landholder/farmer.
The 1901 Census shows that there is still a McCabe household (9 inhabitants; 3 rooms) on a list of 7 households total. Another of the 7 is a Gallagher household (4 inhabitants; 2 rooms). So in 1901 the Gallaghers and McCabes were still neighbors in a very small section outside Glenties.
Joseph Patrick McCabe was my husband's grandfather. He emigrated to the US in 1880 and became successful in the insurance business.
After his life was cut short (he died in April,1919, a vicitim of the 1918 influenza), his widow Mary (O'Brien) McCabe bought a house in suburban Philadelphia, which became home for herself and her 7 children. Much of the family is still located in the Philadelphia area. Some of our McCabes are in New York City and Boston MA.
If there are any connections that ring a bell, please post a response.
wishing you all the best of health,
Susan

This is great that we are all sharing our information . I'm so lost with my family especially the Gallagher's. It's a common name and I haven't been able to locate anything about John Gallagher or his marriage to Grace Duffy. I only heard they were from the Glenties area from an older relative that's think she remembered she heard that. I can't find any records on Francis Sharpe/ Gerin, or his marriage to Grace Munday. But reading different articles it would be hard to find because I believe they were both born in the late 1790's. If anyone has a tree on ancestry or a GED match number please let me know and we can try to compare. I have seen all the names everybody has put questions out about. But I can't connect them to my Sharpe/Gerin, Munday , Gallagher, Duffy. But let's keep this going. Stay safe everyone. Lisa

This is the first time I have seen a connection between Sharpe and Gerin (i have been looking for years where my Greatgrandmother Margaret GEARNS hailed from. Her father Patrick 1810 - 1898 and mother Nancy "Annie" Nayland left Ireland c. 1840 for Canada. They are all buried in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.) as Lisa said spelled 50 ways. Their first 3 children were born Ireland and I believe Donegal but I have not found them anywhere. Some of it is the spelling variations: Ganes, Gerin, Gerring, Gerrans, Gurans, Gearus, Gurens, Gerans, Garens, Gerns, Gearrin, Garen, Gernes, Guarin, Gairns, Garns. I am at a loss! NO spelling yields anyone. Any ideas? Lydia 6

Hi Lydia6, do you have a tree on ancestry? Or a GED match kit number? My GED number is A617247. If you do that may be able to see if there is a link between my Sharpe/Gerin and yours. Thank you so much for that information. And I have not seen that last name NAYLAND in my searching around Donegal, online (probably another name that spelled 500 ways!) I will keep a lookout for that. Thank you. Lisa
Lisa
-
Where did you find the connection in the first place? I do have an ancestry.ca account with my tree but I do not have a GED number - I felt I should get my present family's permission first in case someone was up to no good ;-) My Irish side is Bradshaw (Anacarty and Donohill, Tipperary) / Gearns (?) and Bell / O'Malley all born in the old country. As to Nayland I have seen Nyland, Nieland. I have the Bell in Donegal message board based on 1-one referrence on a marriage certificate! That is all I had to go on :-(

Lydia6. About 50 years ago, darn that sounds awful, my mother was speaking to one of her relatives from Lansford, Schuylkill county Pennsylvania. A lot of her relatives were Breslin and Malloy's. She was speaking to one of the relatives and he told her the name Sharpe used to be Gerin. And that there were many different spellings. But Gerin, translated means sharpe. It meant nothing to me but I remembered it and when I started to do the search I saw that Francis Sharpe in the records sometimes had a slash and Gerin next to.Francis's son Teague ,which would've been my great uncle , is listed the same way with a double last names and a few others that I found but I can't link them directly to the family but I'm sure they are. So I don't know if some stayed kept the old Gaelic name or some went to Sharpe. I could give you the name of my tree on ancestry and you can try to look it up. If you'd rather send me an email I can send you an invitation to see the tree. Mary Alyse Ross Family Tree Or my email is malyse1@yahoo.com Thank you Lisa

It took me a while to read most of these posts, and I still need to go back and give a more thorough reading, but my curiosity has been piqued and then some. My great grandmother's name was Mary Sharpe and my great grandfather was Thomas Halpin. They were from Schuylkill County, but I believe they eventually moved to Connecticut (where I'm from, so someone had to have). The Halpins, as I understand it, came from Limerick whereas the Sharpes came from Donegal. I've been able to trace my roots back to John Sharpe (born sometime in the 1840s-50s in Glenties, Donegal and passed March 15, 1923 in Coaldale, PA). I don't want to ramble too much as this is my first post here, but I'd love to get in touch with some people and see if our paths, do in fact, intersect.
Take care everyone.

My surname from County Donegal is McDevitt Through Ancestry & My Heritage I have found several dna matches in Pennsylvania way back. I am assuming on of the three McDevitts (not Dominique) but perhaps William or Charles who also appeared on an 1834 manifest to New Brunswick, settled in Pennsylvania.
I too have a grdmtch A503909 as do my two brothers FK3978352 and UG8212086SandraG

Hello! I have Irish-American ancestors from Summit Hill (Carbon County) & also from Schuylkill County. I too have heard that the Gallaghers were from the Glenties area.
My grandfather Joseph Bernard Gallagher was born in Lansford & grew up in Summit Hill.
His father John Bernard Gallagher was born in Summit Hill 10 Feb 1896.
John's father Joseph Bernard was born in Summit Hill. He died in Coal Dale, Schuylkill County in 1938.
His father was Bernard Gallagher, born in Ireland, probably Donegal & likely Glenties/Inninkeel Parish.
Apparently,Joseph (died 1938) wrote to an uncle on Temple Bar. That may be a clue to finding living relatives of Bernard.

Hello everyone!
My grandmother, Hannah Brennan 1882-1978 was born at Graffy, Donegal (about 6 miles east of Glenties). Hannah and 3 siblings all immigrated to San Francisco. However, what is relevant to this tread is that my Ancestry tree in her name has become a tree for practically the whole district! Our extended family ranges from Killybegs in the south, east to Letterkenny and Derry, west to Glenties and Ardara, north to Fintown, all through The Rosses and up to Gweedore and Bloody Foreland - in otherwords the whole of the Gaeltacht area of Donegal.
Please Feel free to go to my tree HANNAH BRENNAN on Ancestry and explore.
The primary families that will be found are:
Brennan, McLoone, Gallahger, Breslin, Molloy (Mulloy), Boyle, Craig, Curran, Doherty, Duffy, Gildea, Kelly, Langan, Martin, McBride, McDermitt, McDermott, McGeehan, McGinley, McGuire, McNelis, Meehan, Mulhern, O'Donnell, Quinn, Ruane, Sweeny, Thomas, Timoney (Tamony), Tolan (Toland), Ward....plus many more - including Sharpe.
What is fascinating to me is how so many of these families immigrated to Pennyslvania and inter-married there!I have been given an extensive tree of the McDevitt family, and am in the process of adding it to the Hannah Brennan tree.
There was a large Gallagher family at Strassallagh, near Glenties. I had been discarding hints for a Munday who keeps popping up as a member of a close Gallagher family (he emigrated to Pennsylvania). Only recently I have learned that Munday was a local nickname for Gallagher...so will now have to find this fellow and add him and his descendants to my tree! The most important aspect to master in reseaching families in Ireland is to learn the names of the "townlands". In Ireland it too often seem that everyone has the same forenames and surnames, so the only way to distinguish who belongs to which family is the name of the 'townland'. NOTE, townlands are the smallest division of land in Ireland - and have nothing to do with the name of a town - instead they are farmlands with clusters of perhaps half a dozen homesteads. Some townlands are as small as a couple of city blocks, others are hundreds of acres. Donegal alone has 2711 townlands!
May I suggest that it is a good idea in your records to specify the name of the townland, followed by the Electoral District.
This is the only way I have found to tame the confusion.Warmest wishes to everyone
Janice Kent-Mackenzie (classicaljanice@gmail.com)PS I have not uploaded a gedfile (?) yet as my research is dynamic and still growing, so everything is only on Ancestry.

Sandra when I drop us on Gedmatch to 3 cm which is very low we match all over the place. So it's got to be pretty far back. We match on CHR4 at 3.3 CHR6 at 3.1 CHR8 at 3.3 at CHR9 at 3.9 on CHR 13 at 3.3 on CHR 17 3.3. Chr 22 3.3 I'm not even going to guess at what all that means.! Lol. If anyone else that's reading this has any GED match numbers that seems to be the way to really find out if we're related. I understand some hesitancy in going on jet match. But if anyone wants to share some numbers or I can give someone my email. It is MALYSE 1@yahoo.com. If you feel that you have a number if you want to share it and you don't wanna put it out there. I have a tree on ancestry. If anybody wants to email me their tree information or send an invitation to your tree I can send one back. I'm very curious because this is the side of the family that's really difficult. Naturally I'm looking for late 1790s in DONEGAL which seems to be a little bit impossible. And the other part of the families I don't know. The names that I know Hogan, Conway, Bradley, Sharpe which was GERIN and many different spellings, MUNDY which I understand was Mcloone. Duffy, Gallagher, they're also could be an MORAN. And I'm sure there's other names that I'll never be able to find. I am 66% Irish with most of the family it seems coming from DONEG AL. I am not sure about the Hogan, Conway, Bradley, perhaps DERRY but the majority of them ended up in carbon county Pennsylvania. I know there still family in the Lansford area. thank you all very much. Lisa and happy holidays

I, too, have a tree on Ancestry that I've been able to add quite a bit to as of late. My Irish roots are primarily Sharpe/Gearin and Halpin/Halfpenny, other names I've some link to include Killen, Coyle, Malarkey, Malloy, Maloney, Fisher, Gildea. Of all I've found, the Sharpe name has been the most well documented and it appears a vast majority of them migrated to the Anthracite Region of PA and worked in the coal mines. Not to raise controversy, but I'm getting closer by the day to confirming a direct link to Charles Sharpe, who was tried and hanged for his alleged involvement in the Molly Maguires. I've stumbled upon a few Sharpe ancestors who passed away in Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe). I can't wait for the spring because I fully plan on taking a road trip to the area. As I understand it, many of my ancestors I can confirm relation to have been laid to rest at Summit Hill and St. Jerome's.

Hi Marco, very interesting. I'll probably see you there this spring. My cousin from California is coming in and we are going to the Lansford area. We want to do that before we have our family reunion in DONEGAL. We have not been able to tie our family to the Molly Maguire's yet we don't believe that they are not related somehow. Could you send me a invitation to your tree? Do you have a Gedmatch number

Attached FilesGrandpa John Gallagher.jpg (44.47 KB)condy and bridgett marriage.jpg (160.11 KB)Birth Entry - John Gallagher b 1870 (1).pdf (308.79 KB)
Hello everyone, My name is Margaret (Peggy) Gallagher Soto. My great grandparents came from Ardara Donegal Ireland in 1908. John Gallagher born May 7th 1870 & Mary Mchugh born February 8th 1889. John's parents were John Owen Cornelius also went by Condy....he has been so hard to trace he used all these names in different documents his father on marriage cert was James. I do not yet know who his mother was. He was married to Great grandma Bridget Carr. Her father also James. Both were farmers. It says on their marriage in 1866 that John Owen's father James was deceased. If anyone knows of anything please let me know. I do not have mother's for Bridget or John Owen and cannot figure out his given name at birth being he used all these names. If I could just figure out their parents and siblings. Grandpa John and Grandma Mary Mchugh came to the us in 1908 stopping in Holly Springs Mississippi where their 1st born son James was born. We have been told she was pregnant on their travels here. Then they went on to Memphis, Tennessee had 3 more girls. 2 passed as babies. Grandpa was a fireman there and worked in a family's members store too. They were there a few years and them moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where my daddy was born. They had a total of 10 children. They both passed here. I am adding pictures and documents of what I have for anyone interested and that could possibly help on finding info on Bridget Carr and John Owen Gallagher. I have dna done and uploaded to many places. Last names are many. Uncle Bernie Gallagher managing his dna too. I have many last names including Duffy, O'Gara, O'Donnell, McGinley, Breslin, Brennan, Ward, O'Neil, Molloy, Cunningham, Bryne, McNelius, to name a few. I also have started a facebook group of family I have been finding through dna and all of us here. add me as a friend on facebook if we are family and I will add you if you like.https://www.facebook.com/peggy.soto2. My biggest trees are on ancestry and myherritage with different people there all done through dna matches and taking the main people from their trees and of what I do know. Best to search for last names you are interested in. I have many. Hope everyone is safe and well. Also my email is margaret_soto@yahoo.com.

Hello,
Seems onebranch of my tree is definitely Co. Donegal. Furey and Kelly. I finally found my great grandparents marriage record, they were both from Donegal, but married in Freeland, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. 1884.
One witness was Daniel Sharp. Relative? Friend? There was a Daniel Sharp in Drifton, PA, same time as my great BP grandfather. Likely attended the St Ann's Freeland RC church.
Anyone connected to this Daniel Sharp in Luzerne County?

I am looking to find a connection between an Edward GILDEA or KILDAY who was married to Ann MUNDAY, Their son, John KILDAY was born about 1857 but I'm not certain it was in Donegal! However, my GILDEA connectiuons are in Ballyshannon, Donegal. John married Rhoda Ann CHILDERS in Iowa, United States in 1886 and I have found details of his parents from family search. Has anyone any connection?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Lisa:
I'm not really against the GED badge or anything, just haven't gotten around to it, I suppose. And, though there doesn't appear to be anything linking us, the history buff in me is still glad I joined this forum and connected with some people who, if not related, perhaps had other connections (went to the same school, job, church, served together, etc). All of this fascinates me just the same.
Now as for James:
I can't guarantee there's anything there, but I've recently stumbled upon the name Hannah (or maybe Anna) Gildea (1815-1889) in my endeavors, so there might be something there.
Be well,
Marco

I don't know if this helps anyone, but I've found a few people in my lineage named Munday/Mundy, and from what I can tell, the name might have been McLoone at one point. I'm somewhere in the mid 1800s and it seems like that might have been around the time the name changed. I could be wrong, though.

Hey everyone. So i had a little oops in my tree for great grandpa. He was not John Owen Cornelius. He was Cornelius Gallagher married to Bridget Carr. Children for them so far are my grandpa John, 2 cornelius's one passed as a baby and Patrick and Mary I still have no birth dates for Cornelius or Bridgett. Im not sure if they were from Ardara or moved there and had their children. I do have dna as well as manage my fathers youngest brother 93 years young and my mother. My 2 biggest trees are on Ancestry and myheritage, also on gedmatch, 23&me, family search, umm probably a few more. I had several thousands on my my herritage and their system was having major problems glitching and things months ago and half my tree was deleted. I was so mad. I went through several of my gallagher dna matches and added the a few main people form their trees thinking they at least know who their grandparents were and went from there. I'm not even half way through them.I started doing this for both trees on ancestry and myheritage. Life is a mess right now but I plan on writing a book. Everything I have is in storage right now. We took our 1st trip to Donegal Ireland in October and i want to move there now. Just a dream but it is so beautiful and we meet many family there. Some just by coincidence.
