Daniel Toy (1786-1832)/Rosanna "Rose" M (1780-1878) Coyle residing in  (Upper?) Moville, County of Donegal, Ireland to State of Delaware in the United States, arriving from Nova Scotia on the Schooner Mary Ann in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19 Sep 1917.

The family consisted of Daniel Toy born 6 or 7 Apr 1786 in perhaps Desertogill, County of Donegal, Ireland; his wife, Rosanna "Rose" M Coyle Toy born 16 Aug 1870 in perhaps Aughnish, Donegal, Ireland with 2 boys, Cornelius Neal Toy born 18 Feb 1813 in perhaps Muff Parish, County of Donegal, Ireland  and James A Toy born 8 Dec 1816 perhaps in Donegal County, Ireland.

It is believed that Daniel and Rose were married in Muff Parish, Church of Ireland, County of Donegal, Ireland on 11 Oct 1811.

Daniel's parents names are thought to be Alexander Toy of Scotland and Jane O'Neill of Muff Parish, County of Donegal, Ireland married on 16 Jul 1785 in Muff Parish, County of Donegal, Ireland.  The records for their marriage and birth of Daniel and brother thought to be Alexander thought to be born 27 Oct 1792 were last known to be at the Presbyterian Church, Parish of Desertogill, County of Londonderry, Ireland.

When the family of Daniel and Rose settled in Henry Clay Village/Brandywine Village/Christian Hundred/Wilmington, Clay County, State of Delaware area, Daniel worked at the gunpowder factory, founded by Eleuth?re Ir?n?? du Pont (1771-1834), the Brandywine River Mills which became the largest maker of explosive black powder in the United States.  He died in an explosion in the dust mill on 25 Aug 1832.  He left his widow, Rose and children, Cornelius Neal, James A, Ann, Jane, Mary "Maria", and Daniel.

Would like any records to confirm birth dates, place of birth, and marriage of all parties named, as well as their ancestral/descendant lines.  Any photos of gravestones, documents, etc. would be greatly appreciated related to the family.

Signed, Tuesday (my forename is Tuesday)

  • Dear Tuesday

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you!

I have had a quick look on www.rootsireland.ie and there is a baptism record for an Alexander O?Toy but no baptism date is given. As this is a subscription site, I am limited in what I can see on it. I cannot see any other relevant records.  To find out more about what parish registers survive the 1922 fire in Dublin see the link below. It may be that the records you require were lost in that fire, or that your ancestors were born and married at a time that predates the records themselves:

Can I ask where or how you know the dates of baptism, an index of baptisms online perhaps?

    Best wishes

  • Clare,

Thank you for providing the information...I am beginning to understand more about the importance of knowing the Church in which my ancestors were members and the difference in finding them based upon that information.

I had a deceased relative Ralph Roderick hire a researcher, Charles H Starr, around 1989 to obtain pertinent records regarding our ancestors in Ireland.

Since that time, Daniel's gravestone has been located (in a church basement!) and from that we have "native of Moville, County of Donegal, Ireland"

The information that Charles H Starr located prior to locating the gravestone information is attached.

I just found at the following site, http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/Pari…, just published 1 Jul 2014 information for locating the Church of Ireland information....  Will be contacting the RCB Library to obtain copies of the records.

Now am tasked with locating the pertinent Presbyterian and Catholic records named above.

  • Thank You everyone. I have found your website and located Daniel Toy's Grave marker. It is at Cathedral of St Peter in Wilmington DE. Most of Daniel's family graves are located at St Josephs on the Brandywine RC Church in Greenville ,DE. This church was built in 1841.  There is alot of information about the Toys at The Hagley Museum(DuPont).   I was planning a trip to Ireland when I stumbled on to this site. I look visit the  Muff Parish after I figure out where that is. Sincerely Mike
