hoping to find my great grandfathers line.

on marriage cert. he gives his name as SAMUEL DINSMORE

(his father also samuel) from GORTCORMICAN

I am hoping to find out where that is...and if there are any records pertaining to DINSMORE family.

I DO know a good many of this family were christened, married & buried at the church of Ireland in MUFF.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Gortcormacan townland is in Burt civil parish which is just to the southwest of Muff town and Muff civil parish all in Co. Donegal. Both parishes border Co. Derry. Below are links to the town of Muff and a web site which has a lot of resources for Donegal research. I also looked at the 1901 census for Gortcormacan (spelled Gortcormican in the census). I found a John Dinsmore family. You will note that the oldest son is Samuel. I'm speculating that John is the brother of your Samuel.

  • Thank you Roger,

do you know how I could verify this?

My gt grandfather Samuel was born circa 1845 so yes, it is very possible that he is John's brother.

How would I find a record showing their parents? father Samuel ...mother ???

I have tried with much difficulty and am now trying to contact the church in Muff to see if there are any records....very difficult to do research when you live thousands of miles away!

I certainly appreciate your help Roger!

I agree that your next step is the C of I church in Muff. I took a brief look at the Muff records on the Donegal site I gave you. In the 1837 Tithe records, there was a James Dinsmore and a Samuel Dinsmore. Also, saw Dinsmores in the school records for the 1880s.

  • Hi Lorraine.....

It has been a struggle to find any records as most of them have been destroyed....

My branch of the Dinsmore family comes from Culmore/Muff and Derry....I am trying to contact the

Church of Ireland Diocese Office in Derry to see if I can get any information from the church records....

that may be one way you could find out some information.. I am waiting to hear back from them (I live in Canada and have to do most research via email and internet)

you can also search online at the PRONI website....may help??

but i have recently been contacted by a George Courtenay ( email....gers1986@yahoo.co.uk )

he is also looking for Dinsmores and may be able to help you....?

I will try and keep you up to date with what I can find Lorraine....

    happy hunting!
