Searching for above names or similar circa 1830s. My ancestor Patrick Carrigan arrived in Vermont, USA between 1832 and 1838. Local diocese unwilling to help search. He was Catholic in USA. Son of Frank Carrigan and Rose Lyon: born about 1812, died 1888. He is buried in an unmarked grave - so no monument here - on his farm. He was a butcher also. His children by his first wife (married in Vermont about 1838): Mary (b 1839), Frank (b. 1842), James (b. 1844). Names Carrigan and Lyons in adjacent town lands in Stranorlar parish. Any crumb of a clue would be helpful

  • Hello AB I had a quick look at some records, checked a few parishes in the diocese of Raphoe and earliest records only started in 1850 and much later for RC parishes, did not look at tthem all but you can click on the map on this site and see when the various parish records are available https://registers.nli.ie/

    I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland 1820 to 1840 and got two hits, one Kergan is Church of Ireland (Protestant) and one Susan Carigan (spelling) in Bogstown, Moville in October 1834, mother Wilson father Hugh.

    I looked in the Tithe Applottments for those holiding over 1 Acre of land for tax purposes and got about 4 different Carrigans and many Kerrigans, no Corrigans, this is only the name of one person but shows where they are, the site I do not think gives variant spellings of names. See http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp the period is 1824 to 1838 I think.

    It appears any baptism registers in Donegal were either not kept or are missing.

    Griffiths Valuation done circa 1858 for Donegal lists 3 Carrigan, some Corrigan and 126 or so Kerrigan, see https://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSear…;

    I think there were sailings from Donegal possibly Ballyshannon at some point to the US and Canada, a visit to the Donegal Library site may be benefical to see what local studies have and you could email a query. https://www.donegalcoco.ie/culture/archives/familyhistory/

  • Thank you Pat for your informative reply including data links.

    I believe it was the Tithe Applotments were I found a Lyons near a Carrigan (or some variant spelling) adjacent to each other in the Cappry and Dooish townlands of Stranorlar. It is the only place in County Donegal that I have found the two names near each other.

    My immigrant Patrick Carrigan’s youngest child, Margaret Jane Carrigan Call, died in Vermont within a few miles of her father’s farm in 1941.  Margaret Jane (usually known as Jane in records and the family) cared for her aging father as well as her children. When Jane’s daughter filed out the death certificate, she noted her maternal grandfather was from “Donegal” in “Ireland,” thus the importance of his ancestral family names in the adjacent townlands in Stranorlar parish.

    Do you know of any old graves in Stranorlar parish with either Lyons or Carrigan’s?

    Yours,

    AB

  • Hi AB, I do not live near there, only noticed you query had not been picked up, there is probably a private Facebook group for genealogy in Donegal, there are two and you could also check for Stranolar or Ballybofey, they are really one town if you visit I think you cross a bridge, was often there when I was working.

    Also the local library website or even the parish website.

    Good Luck
