My great grandfather, John Patrick Slavin came to Australia from Scotland but his father, also John, according to family lore came from Letterkenny. He married Ellen Frances McGlinchey. I have a family connection who is a native of Letterkenny and he assured me that there were plenty of McGlincheys still in the area but had never heard the name, Slavin. The only Slavin I have been able to find is a John Slavin baptised in the Stranolar parish in 1866 which would be about the correct time for my John Patrick as the family first appear in the 1881 Scottish census. Both Johns were shoe makers.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There were four John Slavin/Slevin civil birth records in Co. Donegal in 1866 but the mother's name was not McGlinchey on any of the records. In fact, none of the John Slavin/Slevin baptismal/birth records on Roots had a McGlinchey mother. The Co. Donegal RC church records start very late. The Letterkenny RC records start in 1853http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1012 but there is a gap between 1863-March 1868. I was unable to find a record of the Slavin/Slevin and McGlinchey marriage.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Co. Donegal did no have any John Slavin records. there were seven John Slevin records but only one in Conwal parish was close to Letterkenny. We also don't know if John Slevin was in the Griffiths because shoemakers may not always lease land.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Sorry to be so long in replying. Thank you for the information. I I am going to look further with the help of some people at our local Family History Society Irish Special Interest Group. A time machine would come in handy.
