I'm looking for any information on my Sweeney, Bradley, Freil, McGettigan, & Daugherty, family members from the St. Johnston area.
My Great grandfather Edward James Sweeney was born in St. Johnston (Greenhill). His parents were Edward John Sweeney (1839-1931) and Susan Elizabeth Bradley (1837-1913). I have almost no info about siblings of Edward John.In my research, Susan Bradley's parents are listed as Huge Bradley and Hannah Friel. I have Edward John's parents listed as Timothy Sweeney and Mary Daugherty, although I would like to be able to confirm this. Susan Bradley's sister Hannah married a John McGettigan. The Edward John and Susan Sweeney emigrated to Philadelphia around 1886 with their children.
If you have any information on any of the surnames mentioned, please contact me at Emkaygee@aol.com My Aunt Hannah (Edward James' sister) entered the convent in Philadelphia. Her baptismal record is attached.
Thanks in advance for your help! Best Regards, Mary

Hi Mary,
Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information on the families makes a connection with you.
Have you tried looking in church records to see if you can find any information on Edward John, specifically his birth record to get this parents names? Also, sometimes marriage certs listed the couple?s fathers? names so if you can find this it may also be helpful.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Taughboyne/All Saints parish, follow this link:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
