I am searching for more information about the DOOHAN/DOOHEN and McGEEHAN families.  Brothers Patrick (b. abt. 1815) and James (b. 1824) Doohan emigrated from County Donegal first to Newark, New Jersey, USA and then to South Dakota, USA prior to 1857.  They may have been the sons of James and Kelly Doohan.  Family stories indicate Patrick and James came from Falcarragh or Gortahork, or possibly Tory Island.   They may have come to work on the Erie Canal.  Patrick married Catherine McGeehan (b. 1824) in 1857 in Newark, New Jersey.  I know that Catherine was born in Ireland, but I don’t know where or when she immigrated.  James never married as far as I know.  Thank you for any general or specific information you can provide.

You may want to check the Tithe Applotment listings found on the the National Archives site.

http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie  It looks like the name may have been Doughan back in 1830. I pulled out all of the James Doughan records in Tullaghobegly parish and there is one shown for Tory Island.

Another great resource for Donegal is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/

  • Susan,

I'm researching Daniel Doughan (changed in the US to Doughaen) born 15 Sep 1817 who came to the US in 1833 with a brother and sister (Thomas and Helen) and settled in and around Paterson and Wayne, Passaic County NJ.  Based on Tithe Applotment listing, Daniel Doughaen appears to have been from Donegal and because Newark is so close to Paterson I' m wondering if there's any connection to your James. Daniel Doughan stayed in Passaic County until his death.   I'll keep your ancestor in mind as I research mine and let you know if I see any connection.

  • Thank you for your suggestion.  I hadn't thought to look for that spelling.  I have looked for the Doohan name and found some, but I don't kow what to do with them.  I don't know how to connect them with my family.  I don't think I have enough information to mak a linkage.  It has been one of my frustrations.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hi Susan

My ggrandfather was John Doohan from Tullaghobegley/ Tory Island. He was born abt 1820 his father was James and mother a Margaret ?? McGarvey. John married Ellen Gallagher abt 1840 and he and his family emigrated to Australia, under the Donegal Relief Fund, in 1859.  His children were James, Ellen Catherine, Dennis, Liam (William), Margaret, Grace and John Edwin (my grandfather). All children except Grace and John were born in Ireland. Don't know if we are connected.

  • Hello!

I'm thrilled to read that you're also researching Daniel Doughaen, my great great grandfather.  We may have already compared notes elsewhere, but I would be more than happy to share whatever info I have.  How did you identify his brother and sister?

    Cheers!

  • I have some updates to my Doohan/Doohen information.  I've discovered sisters of Patrick (1815-1891) and James (1824-1887) Doohan/Doohen in New Jersey.

    Ann b. 18 September 1822 in Ireland, d. 19 September 1858 in New Jersey, m. Peter McMahon possibly in Ireland, son James b. 1849, d. 1907

    Unis/Eunice b. abt 1827 in Ireland, m. Thomas Traynor

Bridget b. 1828 in Ireland, d. 19 February 1874 in New Jersey, m. Nicholas Korzendorfer (1821-1895), children: William, Catherine, Emma.  (I have found over five different spellings of Nicholas' last name)

I would like to find out more about these new family members.

  • Marg Clifton,

John (Jack) Doohan and Ellen Gallagher were my GGG-Grandparents.  I am descended from their eldest daughter Ellen Catherine, and her daughter Margaret Catherine Kenny.  Maybe we should swap notes?

Just wanted to let you know that I have photo of Ellen Gallagher. Also your GGGrandmother Ellen.

I don't have a photo of John (Jack) Doohan. Would you have by any chance?
