Hi, I have been searching for information on Charles McCole/McCoal who appears on the tithe applotment books for Ardnagappary circa 1850's, I struggle to find anything other than his name on the books.  I would dearly love to go back further with him. His son married Madgey Boyle who variously went under the names Margery, Margaret and Madgie.  I know for sure she had at least one brother Cornelius who came to Australia and reportedly another brother James, they are reportedly coming from Dore.  Cornelius named his parents as Cornelius and Fanny  and he called his only son Manus, so I am thinking these are family names. Hugh and Madgy named their daughter Mary, Fanny, Bridget and Celia. If anybody can give me any advice or information I would be estatic. I am coming to IReland either the end of this year or the beginning of next and want to do some research when I come but dont have a clue where to get started.  I have been unable to get Madgy McColes death certificate to date even though I have sent away to the registry office.  I know she was alive still in 1901 but not in 1911

  • Hi

I had a quick look on www.rootsireland.ie and found a Hugh McCole marrying a Margaret Boyle in 1876.

I then used their names and changed Margaret's name to all the versions that you mentioned and I only found birth records with the name Margaret.  I found a number of children born to this couple but not a Fanny or Celia - I found Bridget 1877, Patrick 1879/1880, Thomas 1882, Mary 1884, John 1886, Bernard 1888, Hugh 1890, Neal 1892, Joseph 1894 and Daniel 1899.

This website is a pay per view so I just found the names but didn't look at the actual transcription of the records.

Do the dates sound about right or am I completely off?

    Kind regards,

    Eimer Shea

  • Hi Eimer, many thanks for doing that, but not the exact family, Madgy was born in the 1830' her children were born from 1859 through to 1869, her last daughter Sheial/Celia was born, I am guessing that many of these Boyle/McColes are probably very closely related.  I actually have tried several times to get a death certificate from the IRish Registry for Madgy but have come up with nothing each time even though I sent money over.  We know she was alive in Ardnagappary in 1901 and her parcel of land had gone to her son in law Edward Donnaghey. Trying to get a death certificate for her has been just hopeless.  We know that the family farmed the land from the 1850's and a wonderful man by the name PJ Domhnaill from the area went to extraordinary lengths to help me from what he gleaned Madgy had brothers Shamous/James that lived in close proximity and we also have proof that her brother Cornelius came to Australia on board the Lady Elma Bruce in 1859. It states his parents on that list as Cornelius and Fanny, so assuming he is a direct relation of Madgys then that would be her parents names.  Do you know Eimer if the irish death certificates have much information on them such as parents names and partners names and where they were buried.

I am just so grateful for any help or advice you could give me.

    Cheers Maureen

  • Hi Maureen,

I had another look on www.rootsireland.ie and found a record of a death for a Madge McCole that died in 1909 and a Margory McCole that died in 1911.

If you type these names into rootsireland, you will be able to see the record too but if you want to see the cert you will have to pay but I think both of these look promising especially Madge McCole.

The Margory McCole was born in 1839 in Inishowen according to familysearch.org - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRJ4-5J8

Unfortunately, Irish dearth certs don't usually have the parents' names on them.

    Kind regards,
