Hello,

I am searching for information about my Porter ancestors who resided in Ballyculter in the early 1800s. John Porter (1747-1812), who was born in Scotland, settled there where his son, Hugh Porter, was born on 20 Aug 1801. Hugh Porter married Jane Coates (1800-1857) in 1820. They had one son, John Wesley Porter (1821-1897), born in Ballyculter before immigrating to the United States in 1823. Any information about these individuals and their lives in Ballyculter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Dear crmedler
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

The Civil Parish of Ballyculter takes in 2 RC parishes; Kilclief and Saul. In Kilclief RC records begin in 1866 for baptisms and 1865 for marriages. For Saul records begin in 1844 for baptisms and 1843 for marriages. As this is the case, there will be no baptosm or marriages records for anyone from this parish before this time.

Records for the Church of Ireland parish of Ballyculter begin in 1777 for baptisms and 1812 for marriages.

If your ancestors were Roman Catholic you will be dependant on other sources like the Tithe Applotment Books and the later Griffith's Valuation for information:
    Tithe:http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
    Griffith Valuation: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

The other earlier source you could check is the 1796 List of Flax Growers: http://www.failteromhat.com/flax1796.php

For later baptisms (ie those after the RC start dates mentioned above) you can try familysearch or rootsireland to see if there is any mention of the family, though the latter is a subscription site

Let us know if you learn anything new

    Best wishes
