Trying to verify the marriage of Agnes McDowell and Hugh Smith in Down, Ireland, possibly Comber, County Down in Ireland. I am looking for any children born to them, possibly: William John, Hugh, Hyrum, and Joseph.

  • Statutory recording of non RC marriages started in 1845. Prior to that you are reliant on church records, not all of which have survived and not all of which are on-line. Ideally you need to know the couples denomination and parish/townlands.

You don?t say what denomination the marriage may have taken place in. For Comber, the Church of Ireland records start in 1683, The Non Subscribing Presbyterian Church in 1838, the 1st Presbyterian church in 1845 & RC 1855.

None of these marriage records are on-line anywhere so far as I can tell, but there are copies of all in PRONI, the public record office, in Belfast. Thye are not on-line there either and a personal visit is required to access them.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church so if you find the marriage, that?s where I would look for her baptism, and that of any siblings.

There?s plenty of Smiths & McDowells on the Rosdavies Co Down site:
