I have been trying for several years to investigate/merge two large Cranney families who lived in the Donaghmore area of Co.Down. My mothers Craney family go back to Patrick (or John) Cranney who married  Rose Ann O'Hare around the 1830's and secondly the Cranney family that stems back to James Cranney and Rose McMahon who were married around the same time period. I am tempted to suggest that the Cranney lads were brothers but I have no evidence to confirm this! Any Cranney's out there that have any knowledge of the history of these two large Catholic families and how they might be connected (they came  from the same or neighbouring Townlands!), please let me know. The second family listed were that of a Regina Cranney from the US, that I believe has now passed away and who extensively researched that family. Many thanks for any and all help on this file.......Kieran Biggins, Alberta, Canada.

  • I found the following at RootsIreland. Patrick and Rose seem to have married twice, 12 days apart, once in Dromore RC church and once in Donaghmore RC church. I have seen double baptisms for infants—once in the Protestant church, once in the RC church—but I haven’t seen two weddings in the RC church for the same couple.

Remember that RootsIreland provided transcriptions, not the actual register, which would be worth looking at.

  • Thank you for your response to my first posting, much appreciated! I think it might be sacreligious for a Catholic couple to married twice in separate RC Churches. In researching my Cranney roots over the years, I have found that the Cranney and O'Hare families were very close....not only in the geographical or social sense, but also in the "biblical" sense! Many, many from each of two families married and indeed sponsored their marraiges and subsequent baptisms. Having said that, I believe that the two marraiges you discussed, were in fact cousins marrying cousins (or second cousons). Given that they were all Irish Catholics, the naming patterns within each of the families was similar and loosely based on the Scottish traditional naming patterns. When looking at the birth registrations for each of these families one mother is referred to as "Rose" and one as "Rose Ann"......sometimes the only way of distinguishing between cousins who had the same names, was to include a middle name for one of them. Anyway, I live in hope that there is a living Cranney out there who has the whole convuluted familiy elucidated and will reveal the truth at some point.......Cheers, Kieran.

  • Hi! I just saw this post regarding Crannys/O'Hares of Donoughmore....I am descended from O'Hares from this area - my 3rd great-grandmother is Ellen O'Hare who married Patrick Hayes.  Their daughter Ellen (my 2nd great-grandmother married Robert Hamilton and some of their children were born in Donoughmore before they came to the US, where a few more children were born.  Ellen O'Hare and Patrick Hayes daughter Mary Hayes married Edward Craney/Cranny (I've seen the name spelled both ways).  They also came the US, settling in New Jersey just as Ellen did.  Mary and Edward were married 29 Jan 1844 in Donoughmore, witnesses John Hayes (Mary's brother) and Bridget Cranny (possibly a sister to Edward?).  Edward died in Harrison/East Newark, New Jersey on 31 Oct 1888.  I obtained a copy of his death certificate, but no parent information was provided.  There was a Margaret Cranny, born about 1815 in Ireland, who also came to the US and lived on the same street as Edward in East Newark...she died 16 Oct 1892 and I obtained her death certificate also, and parents were listed as Patrick Craney/Cranny and Susan Lichlen or Lechlen?  I am not sure if Edward and Margaret are siblings, and not sure if any of this information will help you, but if you'd like to pursue further, let me know.

  • Susan, Thanks you so much for your reply. I was aware of the Edward Cranny/Mary Hay(e)s marraige and children: Patrick, Justin, Anna Eliza and Edward from info I transcribed from the Co.Down Davies site. Unfortunately I haven't been able to link this family to the initial two Cranney families I have been investigating. However I have added your information to what I knew previously. For such a small parish, it is amazing how many Cranney's, O'Hares etc. lived in such close proximity. Many thanks again for sharing.......Cheers, Kieran.

  • My mother was Helen O'hare. Her father was HM O'hare (Henry Michael). His parents were Peter (born 1835) and Anna McGill. Peter's parents were Patrick O'hare and Margaret Craney. I don't have any genealogical information to add but am trying to add info (especially locations) to my Ancestry.com family tree.

  • Regarding the comment about two marriages for the one couple. I doubt very much that this happened. The marriage took place in Donaghmore which is in the DIOCESE of Dromore. I think some records would refer only to the DIOCESE and not name the parish. The record states that the marriage of Patrick Cranny and Rose OHare took place on 14 February 1844 and the witnesses were Edward OHare and Ann Cranny.

On the same page the record of the marriage of James Cranny to Mary OConnor on 18 August 1843. Witnesses were William Cranny and Ann OHare.

I looked up the licenses issued in Newry for all local marriages but did not see either of these as I had expected. Both brides were probably from Donaghmore but I wanted to see if the husbands were from Donaghmore or Aghaderg parish.

I did see a license for Edward Cranny and Mary Hayes in the Newry register which indicated that both were from Donaghmore and would be married there on 26 Janury 1844. I then checked the Donaghmore records and they ere there.

On 29 January 1844 Donaghmore register records the marriage of Edward Cranny to Mary Hayes. John Hayes and Bridget Cranny were witnesses.

The same register records a marriage in Feb or March 1841 for Edward Cranny to Anne Hues. Witnesses Patrick Doyle and Mary Ann OHear. On checking the Newry licenses issued I noted one for Edward Creany to Ann Hughes, both from Donaghmore, for 20 February 1841.

Immediately below this was a license for Felix Creany to marry Catherine McEvoy on the same date. 20 Feb 1841. Again both were from Donaghmore.

I rechecked the Donaghmore register and just before Edward Crannys record is another record which is illegible although I could make out Catherine McAvoy.

It would be worth visiting Familysearch website  and doing some searches with the Creaney/ Cranny/ Cranney names for husband and spouse. Hope some of this is useful.

My great grandmother was Mary Cranny Aghaderg who married Thomas Mackin from Donaghmore in 1839. I recall that a William Cranny was mentioned as a sponsor.

Search family trees on this and you will get an entry for James Cranney and Rose McMahon who lived in the townland of Corgary in the parish of Donaghmore beside Newry Co. Down. It would appear that they married in the 1820s.
