I'm looking to trace my great grandfather John Rooney who according to family was born in Newry. His father was possibly frank Rooney whos wife was Margaret Curran, frank also had brothers ? Bernard and ? Arthur? They were a family of stone masons who moved down to Dublin/ Wicklow for work. My great grandfather then met and married my great grandmother Margaret Doyle from Wicklow. Johns father and brothers moved back to Newry but my great grandfather stayed in Dublin where my grandad Louis Rooney was born in 1919, they also had 3 other sons, Thomas in 1916 and twin boys John and James ? Year. I'm unable to find anything on any of them including my grandads baptism/ birth cert. I would be grateful for any advise.

Hi Luan,
Thank you for your message. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so you should be able to find your granddad and his brothers? birth record in civil records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
Irish Genealogy Tool-kit has a great section on Irish Civil records explaining what is in them and where to access them:
http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html
You could also check in Church records from Newry parish for more information on the family. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Newry parish, follow this link:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Catholic and Church of Ireland records from Dublin city have been uploaded to http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ free of charge. If any births/marriages took place in the city there should be record here.
Have you already tried searching in the 1901/1911 census records for the family? These can give lots of useful information. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Also, I did a search for Rooney?s in Newry in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-64.
