Most people when researching their family history are trying to find where they came from. I am the other way round. I am descended from the  ones that stayed behind, trying to find my ascendants who took flight. Could you be the descendant of one of them?

I am researching the Megarry and Creighton families of Grangicam which is just 3 miles outside of Downpatrick.  I have the rent rolls of this townland from 1823 to 1854 with many names on them.
Happy to send these to anyone who is interested in this townland.

Michael Creighton b 1802 is known to have emigrated to New Brunswick in Canada about 1825.

Michael married Jane Magee and later built the Methodist church at Creightonville.  I am interested in hearing from anyone who knows more about this family.  It is also thought that some earlier uncles or perhaps brothers had emigrated to Canada, did they go out first?

Here is what I have

Robert Creighton (b 1765?) m Anne (Nancy) Ennis
      Children: Christian b 1800, Michael b 1802, Mary Anne b 1804, Isabella b 1806

I have the handwritten baptism records for their children from microfilm records I found at Proni. But I can find nothing further for Christian or Isabella.

Robert also had a first wife - Elizabeth Galway and I have found three of their children as well

Also there is a Richard Creighton at Grangecam who appears to be a brother of Robert. I also have their childrens baptism records (Robert and Margaret). Where did they all go to? So again because of Michael I am thinking Canada.  There is a Richard Crayton who is in the Griffiths valuation for 1863. He must be a Creighton, but even with him I cannot find neither marriage or burial records.

I am descended from his Michael's Mary Anne Creighton who married John Megarry also from Grangicam about 1833.  Their daughter Anne Jane married Thomas Orr from Welshestown/ Russells Quarter North at Saul Parish church in 1862.  There is a memorial headstone at Rathmullan church which indicates they are likely to be buried there.

And just to confuse things further there appear to be many spellings of Megarry, ie McGarry, Magarry, Mc Gerry, M'Garry etc.

  • Hi Brenda,

I came across your message while doing my own search on relatives who lived in Grangicam/Grangecam. You mention having a copy of the rent rolls of this townland from 1823 to 1854 and I would be really interested in checking them out. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy?

    Many thanks!

    Chris
