Hello from Ottawa Canada. My name is Tom McNeely and I am interested in obtaining information on my ancestry.
My great great great grandfather John McNeely arrived in Canada in 1826 to work on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. We believe his place of birth was
County Down. He married Mary (not sure on her surname) in ireland prior to immigrating to Canada.
Any information on his birthplace and descendants currently living in Ireland would be appreciated as I am planning a visit in 2013-2014.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,
have you researched as much as possible in the USA? Things like the census, civil registration, immigration, naturalisation, Wills, headstones and local history of where they settled etc. Any of these things may give you information on the townland they came from which you really need to know. Also of great help would be an approximate year of birth and parents names. The naming pattern of their children could be a clue to that and also religion is important. Did any siblings or other relatives follow. Sometimes researching sideways leads to better clues.
