Hello Everyone! Coming to you from the north shore of Lake Superior, near Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada.

I only know that our McGinns came from County Down because it is stated on one of our grave markers, Matilda Township, Dundas County, Ontario. 9-10 individuals came over 1820, settling in Matilda Township, Dundas County in then Upper Canada. ( now Ontario)

Mother was Margaret, 1770-1825, Dundas. I do not know her maiden name. I do not know the fate of the father. He may have died in Ireland, enroute, or in Dundas but there is no record of him.

Oldest known son was Daniel McGinn 1803-1828, educated for the Roman Catholic priesthood in Ireland BUT(!!!) he decided to forego that carreer and he married, 24 Aug 1824, Anglican, Rachel Shaver, granddaughter of Philip Shaver UE. of Matilda.

I imagine that move probably got him excommunicated? We know that Daniel was the "black sheep" but he was still his mother's favourite and she had an itinerant artist paint his portrait, copied to me by a cousin. Anyway we now have both protestant and Roman Catholic branches in this clan. I have only known we connect to the Dundas McGinn family since July 2010!

Daniel and Rachel had at least 2 children, Eliza 1827 and my GGF John 1828. Daniel drowned in the St Lawrence River 24 Mar 1828 likely before John was born.

Daniel's siblings:

John Alexander McGinn 1812-1901 married Catherine Houlahan, farmed Matilda.

Henry McGinn about 1806-15 Apr 1881 married Sarah McCardle...

Patrick McGinn about 1815-1886 married Ellen Bridget McCormack.

Eliza McGinn ?-? a sponsor for her namesake Eliza McGinn d/o Daniel and Rachel.

Others unknown who may have settled elsewhere.

John A., Patrick and Henry all had children but Patrick's line seems to have daughtered out with one son not marrying and the other dying young of a fractured skull.

The family is proud of "our" boys who died in both wars:

Wilfrid Joseph McGinn 1898-18 Feb 1918, England (pilot-air crash)

Wilfrid Lawrence born the year his Cousin died, 20 Apr,1918- 29 July 1942, Scotland (pilot-air crash)

  • Further to my previous message of April:

Daniel McGinn (about 1803 - 1828) was educated somewhere for the Roman Catholic Priesthood. Could any record of him be found locally in seminaries of the region? Possibly he was born 1790s as he was married 1824 in Dundas, Upper Canada.

The family left Ireland about 1820. So if he was, as stated in the Dundas record about 25 at death in 1828 then birth would be 1803 approximately using "genealgy math" So he would arrive here at age 17..Seems young to be a priest to me!

How old would he have been to graduate as a young priest in Ireland? Of course it is possible he never completed training?

Would his Anglican marriage have been reason for excommunication from the R. C. Church? Would there be a record of that excommunication?

Where would we begin to look?

I have not found any Roman Catholic genealogy help sites.
