Mary Adair, daughter of John Adair b. about 1810, married Joseph Martin 1 August 1836 in the Dromara Presbyterian Church. She was the 2nd wife of Joseph (my 3rd great grandfather) as apparently his first wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Jamison Martin died earlier that year leaving Joseph with 3 small children Elizabeth b. 1830 (my 2nd great grandmother), Thomas b. 1833 and George b. 1834.
Mary and Joseph's children were John, Joseph and Mary Jane. They all moved to the US in 1856 and settled in Oakland, Garrett, MD.
I'd enjoy meeting distant cousins and finding out more. I've done quite a lot of research over the last 15 years, and glad to share what I've discovered. But still don't know who Mary and Joseph's parents were.
What fun, that here on Christmas Day, I'm typing Mary and Joseph :)
all the best and Merry Christmas
Beth

Hi Beth
sorry for the delay in replying but the site was busyover Christmas and Mary and Joseph were obviously busy with other things.
Irish records were very poor back then and any we had became victim to war and stupidity. I am not in County Down and live about 40 miles from Dromora south of the border.
I checked the Tithe Applottments and found the 3 surnames in Down in the same townland of Drumgooland, so it appears they probably married neighbours. See http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp &nb…;
In the period 1848 to 1864 there was a national land valuation done called Griffiths Valuation and it appears Down was done in the early 1860s and there are Adairs still in Drumgooland with a huge Martin hit and 95 Jamieson but none in Drumgooland.
See http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS… this comes with a little map and if you are good at computers you can overlay it on maps here to see it now anduse streetview, personally I have never done it so cannot say it is easy. Sorry forgot it was Northern Ireland so no point in linking our mapping agency but Google to the rescue http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/ordnance-survey-of-northern-ireland?gclid=CM…
I see you mention Presbyterian marriage so assuming not Church of Ireland (Anglican) who are putting their records online slowly here, http://ireland.anglican.org/about/168
There are 2 very good websites for Down see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/ and http://countydown.x10.mx/ just in case you did not come across them.
The first full census available is 1901 and they can be found here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
Sorry I cannot find any relatives for you but hopefully some help and if you try in another while there may be an actual volunteer there as I understand there is a drive to secure more volunteers.
Regards
Pat

Hello Beth,
You may find my extract of the LDS tape 496723 with your marriage here http://adair.ca/496723Dromara/496723c.html and you can order this tape at https://familysearch.org and find your nearest library to check it out if you want the Martin surname.
The 1807 baptism is here http://adair.ca/DromaraChurch/index.html and you can hire Bob Murray whose link is at the top should you wish to have him look into the Martin entries.
There is a contact link above the earth icon at http://adair.ca/Default.htm ahould you care to discuss your family with me. I have my opinion of how these Adair families fit together along with the older Ballynahinch records that also took in Dromara. I'll happily email the pages.
The older Ballynahinch records are here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/WORDS/Bally…

Hi Pat,
Yes, Mary and Joseph were busy over the Christmas Holidays, as were many family historians :) For some reason I just received the email notice of your reply, so my apologies for my delay in responding. Thanks so much for all the great places to search. I have visited those sites often and found the records you mention, but unfortunately I have not been able to sort them out to find my specific ancestors.
all the best,
Beth
