My great grandfather - Robert DOWNEY was baptised on the 20th Jan 1828 at the DROMORE RC Church

Robert married  Rose BURNS (born circa 1834)  on 1st January 1854 at the Dromore RC Church

They had 5 sons all baptised at Dromore RC Church.

James 1854, Robert 1857, Hugh 1859 (dc), Thomas 1863, Hugh 1864

The only possible parents for ROBERT DOWNEY Snr (b1828) so far are JAMES DOWNEY and  MARGARET CROTHERS.

Can anyone confirm/deny any of the above information for me please.

Thanks FROM DOWN UNDER

  • Thanks Elwyn for your prompt reply.

I did search the parish registers, this is where I found a birth for a ROBERT DOWNEY at Dromore RC Church with parents named as JAMES DOWNEY and MARGARET CROTHERS.

I posted this information here on Ireland XO mainly to find if anyone else was claiming this birth - as my family records have ROBERT's father as ROBERT JAMES ... mother unknown ....

    Hey

Thank you for posting. I can confirm all of the above. My great great great grandparents are Robert and Rose Ellen. I am a descendant of James (1854b). I didn't know that Ellen's first name was Rose. I hit a brick wall after finding this.

I am very interested in Robert's parents as I really couldn't find anything at all.

    Thanks again for posting

Hi Phil, thanks again for another reply.

I am going to email the parish priest at Dromore and ask him to look up James DOWNEY and Margaret CROTHERS wedding date and also ask if he can find any more children born to them after Robert.

If it is proved that James & Margaret are our forefathers, it will add an interesting connection to my family, as my mother was a DOWNEY and her sister Margaret DOWNEY married a John CROTHERS early 1940s and she then became Margaret CROTHERS.  So the hunt will be on to see if the original Margaret CROTHERS (bc1800s) is related to my uncle John CROTHERS.   My family came to Australia from Belfast in 1960s, and my mother's siblings went to England and USA, they are all gone now so it's hard to confirm info.

My tree in on Ancestry under McDade-Downey of you want to have a look at it in more detail.

    Regards Anne

  • Hi Anne

Good to hear from you. That is a fantastic coincidence! I was looking in an acestry roots site and seen that there are quite a few mcdade families in Dromore at the same time as the Crothers and Downey families. How strange would that be if they were all in the same place in1800s then regrouped intentionally down under!

Hopefully the priest can help out. It would be great if there was more information on James and Margaret if they are our ancestors. From my info Robert Sr. Was a school teacher but I haven't been able to source the school. I am Interested in when the family moved to Belfast. They lived in a place called hannahstown (Springfield road) which is located on this hills above west Belfast. My line stayed there until 1950s when then moved down into Belfast.

I moved to Glasgow 8 years ago but go home often. If you need anything that I can may be help out with let me know. My Downey family are all still there.

    Best wishes

    Phil
