Have now learned correct county, Down, for this inquiry.  Previously posted incorrectly as County Antrim.

Looking for details about birth and death of Elizabeth Adams, married to William Gibson, 16 April 1840,  Children were Samuel, b. 1843 and Margaret, b. 1848.  Father and children turn up in New York State after 1870, but there is no record of Elizabeth.  I am guessing she died in Ireland.

Both marriage of William and Elizabeth in 1840 and baptism of Samuel in 1843 took place at Leitrim Presbyterian Church in Benraw Townland.  Margaret's baptism may have occurred in Magheralin, Down, as a record with the right names of parents and child was found for 28 July 1849.  Margaret was born February 8, 1848.

    Hi,

Thank you for your message. I?m glad you were able to find the correct place of origin for your ancestors-that is the first major step!

Civil registration did not become mandatory in Ireland until 1864, as a result all births, marriages, deaths were recorded by the local parish church. It is these records that you will have to look at for details of Elizabeth?s birth and death.

Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations:

PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society.

You could also try contacting the Ulster Historical Foundation for assistance with records, however a fee may apply.
