Greetings from Australia,

My family connection is through the Hayes family who lived in Holywood, Bangor.  My great great grandfather John Crawford Woods Hayes was born in Bangor circa 1852.  John's parents were Nevin Hayes and Jane Majory.  John left Ireland and arrived in Australia in 1875.  Some of John's brothers went to the United States.

There is a Hayes family grave at Bangor Abbey Cemetery.

I understand that the Majory (plus spelling variants) came from Groomsport, although I don't know much about them other than Jane Majory's father was Robert Majory.

Thought I would post this message to see if there are any Hayes/Majory family members still around the area.

Regards to all,

Suzanne

  • Hi Suzanne,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information contacts you.

In the meantime you could try contacting the local parish priest to see if he can be of any assistance, or offer any advice on how to ?reach out? locally. Here are the links to their contact pages:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • Hi Suzanne, my Hayes family are also from Bangor. My earliest known are my great grandfather Hugh Hayes 1857 and his wife Mary Curran.

I have many relatives in America and Australia but I can't find the connecting relative. My parents migrated to Australia from Bangor in 1950, the remainder of family still in Bangor. Also great grandparents Niblock from Groomsport. I suspect we are connected.

  • Hi Moira

Wonder if there is a connection here.

I haven't found a Hugh Hayes within my Bangor family as yet.

My gg grandfather Hayes arrived in Australia circa 1872 and settled in Adelaide South Australia.

I have found a Thomas Hayes in the same street, Ean Hill Street Hollywood in the Griffiths Valuation but don't know his connection to my family. Being in the same street as my ggg grandfather Niven Hayes, they may be brothers.

Thomas Hayes may connect with your family.

    Regards
    Suzanne Hayes
