I'm looking for info on Alexander Waugh who I think came form this parish. He show's up in Canada in 1840 at St John's anglican Church marriage records. He married jane Caswell . I'm looking for his back ground in Ireland. He was born in 1810 and that is about all I know. The grifffith Valut has only one Alexander waugh born in 1810 and he belong to magherally parish in ballomoney Ireland. Ant ifo would be so great! Darlene.

Hi Darlene,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking into Alexander?s emigration to try to confirm his place of origin and also for more information? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure, so it may be an idea to check his immigration papers. For information on immigration records in Canada go to the National Library and Archives website here:

Another good website is http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Canadian-immigration-records.html
Waugh was not a very common name in Ireland during the 19th century. Follow this link to see how many Waugh households were recorded in Ireland during the mid-19th century.

You could try checking Church records in Magherally for more information. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Magherally/Tullyish parish follow this link:
For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf
