My wife and I are visiting County Down in May 2023.  When we visit, we'd like to visit the town in which my ancestors were either born, baptized or married.  But after 15 years of using Ancestry.com, Familysearch.com, and many other Ireland genealogy websites, I have not found any records indicating where they were born, baptized, or married in County Down.  I have not been able to determine to which parish they may have belonged.

My GGGGF James McCoubrey was born in County Down on March 21, 1810.  His wife, Jane (McLester) McCoubrey was also born in County Down on November 12, 1811.   The immigrated to the US in the 1830's.  They lived in a town named Green Island, New York.  James died in 1884, and Jane passed away in 1904.

If there is anyone who could help, I would be greatly appreciative.  If you wish to correspond with me, my email address is doganabeer@yahoo.com. Thank you.

In 1863-64, in Griffiths Valuation, there were four Lester/McLester heads of household in Down:

Source  Surname             First Name          Townland           Parish    County

Lester    William                Lisnisk   Drumballyroney Co. Down

McLester             Edward   Ballymote Upper            Down    Co. Down

McLester             Edward   T/downpatrick/irish Street          Down    Co. Down

    There were 17 McCoubreys:

McCoubrey         Catherine            Quarter Cormick               Down    Co. Down

McCoubrey         Douglas               T/killyleagh/shore Street               Killyleagh             Co. Down

McCoubrey         Francis  Ballyhosset, Milltown      Ballee    Co. Down

McCoubrey         Francis  T/downpatrick/bridge Street        Down    Co. Down

McCoubrey         John       T/crossgar/downpatrick St            Kilmore Co. Down

McCoubrey         Johnston              Woodgrange      Down    Co. Down

McCoubrey         Moses   Drumaghlis          Kilmore Co. Down

McCoubrey         Robert   Drumaghlis          Kilmore Co. Down

McCoubrey         William Ballyfotherly       Bangor  Co. Down

McCoubry           John       Cromac Ballynafoy Ballynafoy Road          Knockbreda         Co. Down

McCovera           John       Drumreagh          Kilbroney             Co. Down

McCovera           Owen    Clontafleece       Clonallan             Co. Down

Mccoubrey          William Townparks Of Donaghadee (Bow-Street) Donaghadee       Co. Down

Even though the couple had emigrated long before Griffiths was enumerated, it is likely they left family behind. So it is possible you might trace your roots to one of the above places.

  • Scott,

I attach a record from 1808 for a John McCoubrey, Anadorn which apparently is in the parish of Loughinisland, also a

    record of a Hugh McCoubrey for 1833 - Tithe Applotment Records - 1823 - 1837.

The surname McLester was not found in the Tithe Records.
