Researching Alexander Haslip/Heslop, married to Mary Ann ?, who travelled to England c.1840-1847 with their family, Matthew, Mary Ann, John, Elizabeth, Jane, William and Alexander and settled in Ancoats, Manchester. They gave their place of birth as Newry, Co.Down in various censuses. Alexander died in England in 1862 and Mary Ann in 1866. I am descended through my mother's line from their son John.

  • Found a series of Alexander Heslips in Newry who could be related but unfortunately these were all born much later. Civil registration in Ireland did not take place till 1864 and a lot of the earlier records are not available/no transcribed.

As they left around 1840 you could try the Griffiths Valuation of Ireland and see if there are any other Heslips still in Newry between 1848 and 1864.

  • Hi, I am the parish liaison for Feakle Parish in east county Clare. I have been researching a family who does have one Heslip and will give you the details of one marriage record I have:

On 7 MAR 1910, Samuel JONES a widower of 79 Bridge St. married Jane Eliza HESLIP a spinster of Mt Pleasant.  Samuel JONES gives his father as John JONES (a labourer) while Jane Eliza HESLIP gives her father as Robert HESLIP.  One of the witnesses was William George HESLIP if I read this correctly.

The place of marriage is given as "Parish Church" in Newry, County of Down.

    Hope this helps,
