  • The William Matthews mentioned above is my great great granfather on my mother's maternal side. I am trying to find more about his wfe Mary Cronin, born in Limerick in 1821.

Hugh and William Matthews arrived in Sydney on the Garrow in 1839. Ten years later, in partnership with William Hammond, James Hamilton and William Fisher, they selected 640 acres in the south-east corner of Modewarre parish. Andrew Matthews (1829-1903), a brother, bought over 200 acres south of Lake Modewarre, followed by 640 acres north of the lake in the early 1850s; he later moved to the Riverina. William died in 1861 but the family continued as farmers in the Modewarre district during the remainder of the century. Some of the next generation had moved to Mount Moriac by 1890 but there was still a good representation at Modewarre where Andrew junior (1848-1930) was guardian of St Saviours Church.
