I am searching for the ancestry of my great-great grandfather James Moore. The best information I have is that he was born in Banbridge April 11, 1819. He sailed for Canada at the age of 21 - so about 1840. He lived in Canada for about 10 years then immigrated to the Dutchess County, New York, USA where he married a widow named Mary Chandler nee Vickers. Daughter of Peter Vickers. From New York, James and Mary moved to Scott Wisconsin where they lived the remainder of their lives. James died October 27, 1891 and Mary died a month later on November 30, 1891.
The couple had six children: Catherine, John, Mary Jane, Thomas, George and Alexander.
Any information about his parentage or circumstances of his emmigration from Ireland would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom

You don’t say what denomination James was. If he was Church of Ireland then the baptism records start in 1802. If he was Presbyterian, then the non subscribing Presbyterian church has records from 1756 but with a gap between 1895 and 1813. If he was RC there are no records earlier than 1843.
So far as I can tell neither the church of Ireland nor the Presbyterian records are on-line. The churches hold the originals but there is also a copy of each in PRONI, the public record office in Belfast. Their copies are not on-line and so a personal visit is required to access them.

Thank you Elwyn. I know he was protestant but I don'y know if he was Church of Ireland or Presbyterian. Either way it looks like there are no records online. A trip to Belfast might be in my future.

Tom,
I am also a great great grandchild of James Moore. Have you found out more about his family?
Interested,
