Hi, My 2 x Great Grandfather John Kirby was married to Eliza Dorman in Booterstown, Dublin in 1863.

According to the marriage record, his parents were Jeremy (Jeremiah) & Elizabeth Kirby living in the Phibsborough area of Dublin.

After 10 years of research I have not been able to find anything out about Jeremiah and Elizabeth or whether they had any other children.

John died 1869 in Dublin and the announcement in the local paper suggests there may be family in Australia.

Would love to hear from anyone with any knowledge about the family or possible connection.

Best regards

Steve Kirby

  • Hi Steve

There is a record of the marriage of Jeremiah Kirby to Elizabeth 1817 in Limerick on www.rootsireland.ie/ (which charges to view records)

No Dublin or more recent record I'm afraid

There are 4 birth/baptism records of children of Jeremiah Kirby & Elizabeth:

Edmond 1817 Limerick  John 1839 Waterford  Jeremiah Charles 1841 Waterford  Margaret 1850 Waterford

However I imagine the marriage would have been 1830's to have children marrying in the 1860's so perhaps the Waterford ones could be right.

On Griffiths Valuation (freely available online) there is a Jeremiah Kirby in Dublin County.

The Yuille tree on ancestry has Elizabeth as Elizabeth Sullivan but no further info!

  • Hi Col,

Thanks very much for your very prompt reply.

My John Kirby would have been born c.1840 so the one you mention above born Waterford is well worh further exploration.

When he died in 1869 (aged 30) the newspaper announcement stated that his parents were with him. I cannot find satisfactory death records for either of his parents. Hardly surprising as John's death was never 'officially' recorded. I got all the information from the newspaper. It even told me where he was going to be burried (Glasnevin) and enabled me to find his grave. But no death certificate was issued.

I've always been looking at Dublin records (been there twice to do research). It looks kile I need to expand my research.

I've just remembered, at John's wedding in 1863 one of the witnesses was William Kirby. I have no idea who he is. Possibly a brother ?

  • Hi Steve,

I had a look for death records of Jeremiah & Elizabeth

There is one for Elizabeth Kirby 1922 age 58 in Dublin on rootsireland so born abt 1864

Can't find one for Jeremiah in Dublin but there are 10 death records of Jeremiah Kirby from 1871 to 1916 with 7 in Limerick & 3 in Tipperary

    1871 age 76  Lim  born 1795

    1881       80  Lim          1801

    1882       64  Tipp         1818

    1882       83  Lim         1799

    1886       66  Lim         1820

    1886       40  Lim         1846

    1893       45  Lim         1848

    1902       29  Tipp         1873

    1911       28  Lim         1883

    1916      78   Tipp        1838

The 1886 born 1820 Limerick might fit if he went 'home' to die or died while there.

  • My ancestor William Kirby married Euphemia Talbot in Dublin in 1823. They had 3 sons born in ireland, not sure where,  Edward c 1825,, John c 1826 and Thomas c 1831. Then the family moved to England where 2 daughters were born. William Kirby had a sister Emily b c 1804 Ireland living with the family in 1841 and 1851 censuses in England. In 1841 they were in Birkenhead, Cheshire and from 1851 in Liverpool. William disappeared after 1851 census. Don't know where he went. Have investigated deaths between 1851-1861 but none seem to fit. Perhaps he was the marriage witness in 1863? Son John never married. Edward married imaybe n Ireland. He was back in Liverpool by 1861 with a wife and 10y old daughter both born in ireland.

Sons John and Edward died young in 1861 and 1863. Thomas married in Liverpool and stayed there. Charlotte married a woollen manufacturer from Kendal, Westmorland and Alicia, my great great grandmother married a ships captain Charles Phillips Newman from the Isles of Scilly and travelled around the world with him.

The first Kirby to migrate to Australia, where I live, was my paternal grandfather in 1919, son of Alicia Kirby's daughter Emily Kirby Newman. If you're confused about his name I'm not surprised. My grandfather was born Cyril Karl Schulz (father German) but changed his name to various things, including Cyril Terence Charles Kirby.

In all this I have never known where in ireland they came from. Like you, I found the nmarriage only in a newspaper notice transcribed from the Connacht Journal:

June 12 1823 Connaught Journal, published Galway, Ireland, Thursday, June 12, 1823
MARRIAGES On the 2d instant, William KIRBY, Esq to Euphemia, eldest daughter of Mr. TALBOT, of Lower Gardiner street (Dublin).

There are some common names in your tree. Maybe we are connected?

  • Last year I decided to go down the DNA route. I think it's the only way I will be able to find anyone related. My details are now on file at FamilyTreeDNA, so hopefully some time in the future I will get a match with someone and then we can try and work out the connection.

If all the Kirby's of Ireland could do this, I'm sure we could get somewhere with it.

  • Hi Steve

I'm going the DNA route now too, but I bought the Ancestry DNA kit recently on a special. My brother, John Kirby, is going to do it too. Can we compare our results via Gedmatch, or is this till not possible?

  • Hi Jenni,

Family Tree DNA posts its results on Ysearch.org

I'm not sure if Ancestry do the same.

When you get the results, let me know and I will send you my DNA profile and we can see if there are any similarities.

    Fingers crossed.
