Hi
I have found on the 1901 census that a James O'Brien was born in Waterford in 1971?. If he is my ancestor his father was also James O'Brien a Blacksmith and his wife was Hannah Stacie. Is there anyway I can confirm my connection.
Thank you

Maureen:
You would need to get the civil birth record or a baptismal record which shows the names of the parents.
Ages in the 1901 census were not always reliable. Can you forward a link to the 1901 censu record?
I did locate an 1870 and an 1871 civil birth index records for a James O'Brien in Co. Waterford.

Thanks for getting back to me Roger. I am afraid I don't know how to send you a link for the census but the infromation is James O'Brien 30, Rebecca 25, Waller(Walter) 8, James 6, Rebecca 4, Violet 3. They lived at House 311.2 O'Brien Place Pembroke West Dublin.
I have just sound out that Hannah Stacie is really Anastasia Vengin. Her Christian name must have sounded like Hannah Stacie

Maureen:
The 1911 census was taken on March 31st 1911 so depending on the month of birth a 30 year old could have been born in 1870 or 1871. Also, this assumes the person or his spouse did not approximate the age. As I indicated, below are the two civil birth index records that I located in Co. Waterford in 1870-1871. You can write for a copy (costs around 4 euros) to the General Register Office. I displayed instructions below the index records. I would give them both records and ask for the one with a father James and mother Anastasia. It is possible that neither index record applies to the James you found in Dublin.

Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
