I have struck a brickwall in researching my husband's great grandfather. James KEATING married and died in New Zealand. On the marriage, children's and death certificates his birthplace is given as Dublin. Working back his birth year is c1842. He had a brother William born c1839, worked back from his death certificate, also came to NZ. He didn't marry and died in 1908. There are no particulars on his death certificate. So far I haven't been able to find him on any immigrant ship.

June:
You may want to look at www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Dublin church records. I found a baptismal record in 1842 for a James Keating. There were also two James Keating baptisms in 1841. Below is the 1842 record. You can also look for William.

Thanks for that. I have got the baptismal record for him and also William, but William is shown as 1845 which is 6 years different from that calculated from his death certiificate. I admit that it could be possible that his death certificate is incorrect as it was after James died so I don't know who would have supplied the information as to his age.
The only information on James' death certificate was that his father was a merchant. If that ties in with John Keating's occupation we could be on the right track.
