Greetings from America! I am researching my husband's family tree and trying to track down some Dublin ancestors who I believe left around 1855-1856.
The family includes:
- James Connolly, born some time between 1823 - 1825
- Mary, his wife, who is four years younger, born between 1827-1829
- Christopher, their son, born about 1848
- Mary, their daughter, born about 1854
After leaving Dublin, the family must have gone to Hull, Yorkshire, England where they had two more sons. By the 1861 UK Census, they are settled in Dukinfield, Lancashire, England. This Census also lists that they were born in Dublin. The family seemed to stay in the Dukinfield area for two generations, until my husband's grandfather John Wilford Connolly, immigrated to America in 1907.
Our family is very eager to find out any information available about this branch of the family. Wilford's father, the son of James Connolly, died when he was only three years old. Though Wilford passed in 1991, he left a written history that notes that he didn't know much about this branch of his family. His daughter, my mother-in-law, feels this loss of knowledge very acutely. Any assistance with tracking down this family would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
April Moore Chandler

I have John Connolly b1835 Cavan (not Dublin), left Ireland about 1857 at the time of the potato famine like your children’s ? ancestor. His son, my great-grandfather was James. I expect you know that the name is from phonetic Gaelic and means from (con) the dynasty of Niall of the Nine Hostages, an Irish ‘king’ who died circa 450. You can google that.
Kind regards
Sheila
