Have you tried looking in church records for information on the MacDonalds?

Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may help you is the irishtimes. Here they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Glasthule follow this link:

Also, Catholic and Church of Ireland records are currently being uploaded free of charge to www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html However, as this is an ongoing project not all records are available yet.

Do you know much about their emigration? Sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure so it may be in your interest to look into this. For immigration information in the US go to http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Finally, you could do a search of the 1901and 1911 census records to see if you can find any information on family that remained behind. You can search this here:
